Be it known that I, ERLE SoHURn, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Wamego, in the county of Pottawatomie and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Neck Shield and Pad; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make anduse the same. i i I This invention relates to the art of harness, and particularly to a new and useful combination neck shield, suitably padded, and provided with an arched metallic strap, designed to be engaged by the top straps of the collar and hames, to shield the horses; neck against rubbing. i

One of the features of the invention is. the provision of a galvanized iron arched plate, the central arched portion of which is provided with an opening, over which the arched metallic strap extends" higher than the end arched portions of the galvanized plate. i j j Another feature of the invention is the provision of a lever shield or covering for the inner and outer surfaces of the galvanized iron plate. Said shield or covering is constructed of four sections, an inner sec-' tion in one piece, two outer side sections, and two outer end arched sections, which are stitched to the outer side sections.

Another feature of the invention is that the corners of the guard are turned upwardly and outwardly,as are also the side and end edges of theguard, to prevent the edges and corners from contacting with the horse. To accomplish the turning up and outwardly of the edges and corners, the galvanized iron plate does not completely fill the space between the inner and outer pieces or sections of the covering or shield, at the side edges and the ends thereof.

In practical fields it may be found necessary to subject the minor details of con-M struction to alterations, to which the patentee is entitled, provided the alterations fall within the scope of what is claimed.

The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed. 1

Referring moreparticularly to the drawings .1 designates a galvanized arched plate,

the central. archedportion of which is pro- "vided with an opening'2. Extending transversely of theopening 2 is a metallic strap 3, secured at 4: to the sides of the galvanized iron plate 1. This metallic strap has its arched portion disposed upon a plane higher than the end arched portions 5 of said plate. The edge portionsof the strap 8 adjacent its arch are upset, turned or curved up wardly forming-curved flanges 6, to prevent the straps of the collar or hames from displacement. The end portions of the strap 3 are provided with integral tongues 7, which are formed in rolls 8, for the reception of the pins or bolts 9, which also penetrate, the eyes 10 of the loops 11, through which the straps of the collar. pass. One end of each bolt 9 is threaded into one of the eyes 10 of each loop 11.

' A covering of leather or other suitable material is provided for incasing the plate 1. This covering comprises an inner sheath 12, which conforms to the contour of the plate 1 and disposed adjacent thereto, and two outer side sheaths 13, and two end arched sheaths 14, which are designed to engage the end arched portions 5 of the plate 1, and are stitched as at 15 to the side sheaths ,13. The inner sheath and the side sheaths are stitched together as at 16 adjacent the lower edges of the guard, and at 17 adjacent the end edges. However, the plate 1 does not quite fill the inner and outer sheaths of the covering, adjacent the lower side edges and end edges, thereby rendering it possible to dispose or curve the edge portions of the coveringupwardly and outwardly, to prevent their rubbing the horse. The corners of the covering are especially turned outwardly and upwardly to prevent rubbing, owing to the fact that the corners of the plate 1 are beveled off as.

From the foregoing it is apparent that there has been devised an exceedingly simple The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. A neck shield comprising an arched metal plate having a central opening in the arched portion thereof, a metallic strap having its ends secured to the side portion of the plate adjacent the side of the opening and arching the opening, the arch of the strap extending higher than the arched ends of the plate and designed to be engaged concentrically by the straps of the hames, said arched strap having means to receive the strap of the hame, and a covering for the plate comprising an inner sheath, two outer side sheaths and two end arched sheaths suitably stitched together.

2. A neck shield comprising an arched metal plate having a central opening in the arched portion thereof and provided with a covering, and a metallic strap having its ends secured to the side, portions of the plate adjacent opposite sides of the opening and having a curved arch spaced above and arching the opening and designed to be concentrically engaged by the straps of a pair of hames, said curved arch of the metallic strap having forward and rear curved flanges to prevent displacement of the straps of the hames.-

3. A neck shield comprising an arched metal plate having a central opening in the arched portion thereof and provided with a sheath covering, a metallic strap having its ends secured to the opposite'side portions of the plate adjacent the opening, the

ends of the arched strap terminating in tongues bent to form rolls, bolts received in the rolls, and loops pivoted on the bolt.

4. A neck shield comprising an arched metal plate having a central opening, and a metallic strap provided with a curved arch spaced above and arching the opening, the inner face of the metal plate having a sheath covering, the outer side faces of the opposite sides of the metal plate having sheaths, a pair of sheaths. engaging and arching over the end portions of the plate beyond said opening and stitched to the side sheaths, the side sheaths and the inner sheath having their lower sideedge portions stitched together, the end edge portions of the side sheaths, the outer arched sheaths and the inner sheath being stitched together beyond the ends of the metal plate, the end edges of ,the inner and outer sheaths and the corners thereof and the lower side edges being curved or deflected outwardly and upwardly to avoid abrupt corners.
