HORSE COLLAR FAS'TENINGS. No.179,573. v Patented. July 4,1876.
ILPETER3. FNOTO-UTHOGRAPKEF. WASHINGTON D C ERASTUS S. LAFFERTY, OF SALTSBU-RG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE-COLLAR FASTENINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,573, dated July 4, 1876; application filed May 4, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ERASTUS S. LAFFERTY,
of Saltsburg, county of Indiana, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and use ful Improvement in Horse-Collar Fastening, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is a device for the convenient fastening of the two ends of a horse-collar, where now two or more buckles are commonly used, my device being in every way asstrong and useful for that purpose, and, besides, being more rapidly fastened and unfastened.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan-view of a horse-collar with my fastening device. Fig. 2, is a view of sections of a collar, with a full view of the fastening device shown. Fig. 3 is a detached perspective view of the fastening device.
Inthe drawings, A represents a horse-collar. B and b are links, of which the link B is fastened at B B by straps B B sewed to the collar. 0 is a baseplate of sheet-brass, having the lugs c 0 This base-plate is made of atriangular shape, and is riveted securely to the collar, on the end opposite the link B. D is a V-shaped lever, having the lugs d d, and is fastened by a pin or bolt to the lugs 0 0 the two ends of the collar are brought together, by means of the link B and lever D, the link will have a bearing against the lugs d d, and by such pressure will hold the lever down and in place without theaid of other means.
' In operating my invention, the collar being -ly in the hame-groove in the collar.
side to which it is fastened, a perfect connection is made between the two ends of the collar. When the collar is on the neck, the operator, after the hames are taken away, desiring to take the collar off, can do so by raising the lever D, and carrying it over toward the side of the link B, when a disconnection is effected between the two ends of the collar.
For the purpose of illustration, I use only two links, B and b,- but any number of such links may be used. These links are and may be constructed of a square shape, and out of brass or other suitable wire. The surplus links'are-used to increase the width of the collar at the top.
In construction of the lever D, I depress the narrow end of the same, so as to fit close- I con struct the base-plate 0 out of sheet-brass or other suitable material. I make this plate of a triangular shape, and form the lugs c c by turning up the two corners of the same. This plate is riveted securely to the collar on its appropriate side. A hole is made in each of the lugs c 0 for the purpose of fastening, by'
tie ordinary way, (by bolt, pin, or screw,) the lever D to the same. The lever D is made out of sheet-brass or other suitable sheet metal, and the lugs 61 d have holes for the purpose of fastening by bolt, pin, or screw,
in the usual way. This lever is so constructed that when Having thus'described my invention, what I claim is An adjustable horse-collar fastening, consisting of a series of links, B b, lever D, formed and bent to fit in the groove of the collar, base-plate G, and lugs 0 0 all combined and constructed substantially as set forth.
ERASTUS S. LAFFERTY.
