To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN H. ORMsBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bolton Landing, in the county of WVarren and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful "Improvements in Holdbacks for Vehicles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invent-ion has relation to improvements in devices for attaching the breechin g or strap connected thereto with the thills of a vehicle; and it consists in the construction, novel combination, and adaptation of parts, hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a thill with my improved device attached thereto, the side strap and breeching being shown in their relative position. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the thill and holdback, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of my improved device removed from the thill.
Referring to the said drawings by letter, A indicates a thill of the ordinary construction.
B indicates my improved holdback or breeching-attaching device. This holdback B, which is formed from a single piece of metal, is provided at one end with a laterallyelongated portion a, arranged at substantially a right angle to the remaining portion, and having screwopenings for the passage of screws to secure the device to the thill, and the portion designed to receive and hold the ln'eeching-strap is reduced, as shown, to form a tongue I). The tongue portion 19 is then bent upon the lateral portion a and curved upwardly and inwardly, as shown, adapting it to curve around the periphery of the thill a sufficient distance therefrom to allow of the reception of the breeching-strap, which seats itself in the loop portion formed by turning the holdback upon itself, and thus brings the strain to bear upon the portion best calculated to withstand the strain, the danger of casual unfastening of the breeching-strap being thoroughly obviated by the peculiar construction of the holdback when in position. Having described my invention, what I claim is-' 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a holdback for vehicle-thills formed from a single piece of metal, the securing portion of which is elongated and extended laterally, and having the tongue portion bent upon the lateral portion and then curved upwardly and inwardly over the lateral portion, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with a vehicle-thill, of a holdback secured to the under side thereof, said holdback being formed from a single piece of metal, and having its securing portion elongated and extended laterally, and having the tongue portion bent upon the lateral portion and then curved upwardly and inwardly around the outer and top portions of the thill, substantially as described.
