  • This invention relates to holdbacks for vehicles; and it consists in a certain construction and arrangement of parts, whereby the holdback-strap may be readily and firmly secured to the thill, the object being to afford a cheap and substantial holdback, one that may be firmly secured to the thill, that is neat in appearance, and by means of which a sulky-hitch is accomplished with less length of strap than is required in the common way, all of which will be fully hereinafter set forth, and the essential features of my device pointed out particularly in the claims.

HOLDBACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 437,294, dated September 30, 1890. Application filed May 5) 1890. Serial No. 350,693. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, ISAAC H. J. ELLSWORTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jackson, in the county of Jackson and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holdbacks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to holdbacks for vehicles; and it consists in a certain construction and arrangement of parts, whereby the holdback-strap may be readily and firmly secured to the thill, the object being to afford a cheap and substantial holdback, one that may be firmly secured to the thill, that is neat in appearance, and by means of which a sulky-hitch is accomplished with less length of strap than is required in the common way, all of which will be fully hereinafter set forth, and the essential features of my device pointed out particularly in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the specification, Figure 1 is a view of a thill to which my improved holdback is attached, the ends of the thill being broken away, showing the holdback-strap passing around the thill through my device and secured to a ring in the breeching of the harness. Fig. 2 is an inverted view of a section of thill to which my device is attached, show-' ing the strap passing through the slotsin said device as in making the hitch, and the manner of securing said device to the thill. Fig. 3 is a cross-section through a thill to which my improved holdback is attached. Fig. 4 is an inverted view of my improved device. Fig. 5 is a top plan of same. Fig. 6 is an end elevation.
As indicated in the drawings, A represents athill; B, my improved holdback device, and S the holdback-strap.
This improved device may be made of any material suitable for the purpose, (cast from iron being preferred,) and is secured to the under face of the thill and in the proper position by means of the screws 3 s passing through the holes a a; in the lugs 3 3 and screwing into the thill, the shoulder O of said device bearing against the inner face of the thill. (See Fig. 2.)
The hitch to the thill is made in the following manner: The strap S being secured to the breeching, as shown in Fig. 1, the free or eyeleted end of said strap is passed through the sloto in the bridge D, (see Fig. 2,) brought up over and wound around the thill, then passed down through the slanting slot 6 in the shoulder C, (see Fig. 3,) the beveled face 2 of said slot turning the end of the strap out, when it is drawn through and secured by the buckle E, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. To unhitch from the thill, the strap is unbuckled from the buckle E and its free end drawn back through the slot e, unwound from the thill, and drawn out of the slot 0 through the bridge D'. It is then unhitched.
It will be observed that by the employment of the herein-described device the holdbackstrap may be quickly and firmly fastened 'to the thill, requiring but one wrap of said strap around the thill, effecting a neat, rapid, and substantial sulky-hitch.
Having thus fully set forth my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Aholdback device having the bridge D, provided with the slot 0, and the projecting shoulder 0, having the slanting slot e, said device adapted to be secured to the under face of thills, as and for the purposes specified.
2. The combination of the thill A, strap S, and holdback B, said holdback having the bridge D, provided with the slot 0, the shoulder 0, having the slanting slot 6, the lugs 3 3, having the holes a (1, adapted to receive the screws 8 s, by means of which said holdback is secured to the thill for the purpose specified.
