SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.- 302,708, dated July 29; 188%.

Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER G. Carlo, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and use ful Improvement in Horse-Collar Saddles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,

The object of this invention is to simpify the construction an d cheapen the manufacture of harness, and promote freedom of movement in harnessed horses. v

The invention consists in a saddle constructed to fit upon the top of a horse-collar. and provided with side loops to receive thill or tug straps, whereby the thills 0r tugs can be supported from the said collar. The saddleisprovided at its forward end with acheckhook and its rear end with a back-strap loop, to adapt the saddle to receive a check-rein,

5 as will be hereinafter fully described.

A represents the saddle, the body of which is so formed as to fit upon the top of the ordinary collar,where it is kept in place by the upper hame-strap, B, which passes over it,

0 the hames 0 being made of such a length that their upper ends will be a little below the lower edges of the said saddle A, as shown in Fig. 1.

To the front or top of the forward end of the saddle A is secured a check-hook, D, the

shank of which passes through a hole in the said saddle and has a nut screwed upon its end.

Upon the rear end of the saddle A is formed a loop, E, to receive the forward end of the back-strap, to the other end of which is attached the crupper. The loop E may be formed upon the rear edge of the top of the saddle A, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, or beneath the said edge, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, as the form or style of the saddle may render most convenient.

Upon the side edges of the saddle A are formed loops F to receive straps, the lower ends of which, in the case of single harness, are designed to be provided with loops to receive the thills, andin the case of double harness are designed to be secured to the ha1ne-tug buckles or' to the tugs or traces at the rear side of the horses shoulders.

I prefer to make the thill or tug straps of each horse in one piece, and pass it through the loops F and over the top of the saddle A, so that on the downward pressure upon one'of the thillsas, for instance, when a man steps upon the rear part of one of the thills in getting into and out of a wagonthe said strap will slide upon the saddle without drawing the saddle and the top of the collar to one side and tending to twist the neck of the horse.

In this case ribs G can be formed across the top of the saddle A, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, to form a groove to receive the said strap.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As a new article of manufacture, a saddle 8o constructed to fit over and upon a horse-collar, and provided with side loops, substantially as and for the purpose specifiechwhcreby thill or tug straps may be attached to and supported upon an ordinary horse-collar.
