LOOP-BAR FOR, HARNESSES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 33l9,707 dated September 28, 1886.

To all whom, it may concerni- Be it known that I, NATHAN A. GARDINER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Virgil, inthe county of Cortland and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loop-Bars for Harnesses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

The object of my invention is to provide an improved loop-bar to be secured on the front of the breast-collar of a harness for the attachment of the brace-straps of the neckpiece and themartingale and the neck-yoke strap, when the harness is used with that of another for holding a neck-yoke to support a tongue; andit consists in the construction hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 represents my improved loop-bar secured to a breast-collar.

Fig. 2 shows an enlarged view of the loop-bar detached from the collar.

Like letters of reference refer to corresponding parts in each figure of the drawings.

The loop-bar consists of a straight or main bar, A, recessed in its center portion, a, on the upper side, and having a rectangular loop, B, depending from its lower side corresponding in width with the recess a. The horizontal bar 0, uniting the lower ends of the vertical portions 1) of the loop B, is recessed and rounded on its under side at a, to conform in width with the interior portion of the loop. Each end of the main bar A is vertically widened into an arm, D, which extends downward and outward at an incline to the upper surface of the main bar, to prevent their being drawn up at any time by thebracestrap a, so a to come into contact with the neck of the horse. \Vithin these arms loopholes (I are made of the same inclination, and of a sufficient width to receive and hold a strap. The neck or saddle piece F, which passes over the'neck of the horse, is divided on each side into two supporting brace-straps.

The front ones, E, are secured into loop-holes d of the arms by means of loops and sewing, or'by buckles, as desired,while the rear braces, G, are drawn back and fastened over the side of the buckle g, holding the tug.

The loop-bar is secured to the front and center of the breast-collar H by means of fastenings h around the main bar on the outer sides of the vertical portions 2 of the loop. One end of a martingale, I, is passed around the recessed portion a of the main bar, and is fastened by sewing or otherwise, and depends through the opening of the loop to be secured to the girth or belly-band. Around the horizontal bar 0, forming the lower portion of the loop B, is fastened the neck-yoke strap J,

when it is desired to use the harness with an-- .strap that fastens to the girth or belly-band, and provides a convenient attachment for the neck-yoke strap or the martingale-strap holding the rings for the reins.

The bar may be made of any kind of strong suitable material, as cast or malleable iron, finely finished by nickel-plating, or of brass polished tomake it a part of the ornamental trimming of the harness.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

1. As an improved article of manufacture, a loop-bar for harnesses, consisting of a main bar recessed in its center, and having depending beneath the recess a rectangular loop, and having its ends widened, forming an arm extending downward and outward with loopholes therein, as aud for the purpose set forth.

2.
