G. M. 'SIGKLESTEEL.
SHAFT TUG.
Patented May 4; 1886.
INVENTOR I 5772166 WITNESSES .immv
ATTORNEYS.
RS. mom-uxh m her UNITED STATES GEORGE M. SIGKLESTEEL, OF
PATENT OFFICE.
NORTH BRANCH, MICHIGAN.
SHAFT-TUG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 341,063, dated May 4, 1886.
Application filed August 17, 1885. Serial No. 174,533. -(No model.)
To all whom, it may concern..-
Be it known that I, GEORGE M. SIcKLE- swarm, of North Branch, in the county of Lapeer and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Shaft-Tug, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved shaft-tug which holds the shaft or thills and prevents them from dropping, even if the brace or whiffletree breaks, and also to prevent the vehicle from running on the horse in case of breaking of the shaft or tree.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, as will be fully set forth and described hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved shaft-tug. Fig. 2 is a front view of metal plate and hook. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal face view of the billet.
The metal strap or plate A is provided with three or more loops, B, on its outer surface, and with atransverse slot, 0. A pin, D, projects from the plate or strap A.
The strap E,which is secured to the saddlepad, is passed through the loops B and through the slot O, the pin D passing into an aperture in the strap, and thus preventing the strap from moving lengthwise.
The lower end of the strap or plate A is bent to form a hook, F, having its end bent down to form anose, G.
The billet H has a widened part, J, which is placed in the hook F in the manner shown, and is held in place by rivets K. The billet is provided on its inner end with a tongue, L, which is passed through a slot in the end of the hook directly below the nose G.
The billet H has a longitudinal slot, M, on one end of which a transverse metal plate, N, is secured, against which the nose G rests.
Before the shaft is placed in the hook Fthe billet H is raised, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and after the shaft has been placed in the hook the billet is swung down, the nose G passing through the slot M. The thill is held securely, and cannot drop in case the billet breaks or slips, as the hook F holds the thill.
The tugis verysimpleinconstructiomstrong and durable, and can be used for thills of all sizes without any change in shaft-bearer or belly-bands.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the metal plate A, provided with thehook F,ofthebillet1 having the slot M, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination.with the metal plate A, having the hook F, of the strap or billet H, having the slot M, and the tongue L, passed through a slot in the end of the hook, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The combination,with-the metal plate A, having the hook F, provided with nose G on its end, of the billet or strap H, havingthe slot M and the cross-pieee N at the end ofthe slot, substantially as herein shown and described.
4. The combination, with the plate A, having the slot O, the hook F, and the bands B, of the strap E and the billet H, substantially as herein shown and described.
5. The shaft-tug plate consisting of a body or shank and a hook, and having a lateral slotted bend or ofiset at the juncture of such shank and hook, substantially as set forth.
GEO. M. SIGKLESTEEL.
