SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,739, dated March 23, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN D. BENTLEY, of Willimantie, in the county of Windham and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rein-Holders; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the IO same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the holder and rein Fig. 2, a section thereof through 00 w of Fig. l, and Fig.3 a side view with portion of the rein and loop broken.

My invention has for its object the production of a reinholder which may be connected to the rein without the necessity of drawing the rein from one end nearly unto the other in order to secure the hand-loop thereto; and to that end itcon sists of an arched frame provided with a removable pin, as hereinafter described;

also, in the combination specified.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the holder, which is made of metal or other suitable material and it consists of a rectangular frame having inclined or arched o sides B and a removable pin, C, which, in this instance, has a head, D, and a threaded end, E, and is passed through holes a in the sides of the frame, and held therein by the threads thereon engaging with threads formed in at 5 least one of the holes. The rein is indicated by the letter F, and the hand-loop by the letter G, the latter being represented as having its two ends secured together at H by means of a strip of leather, I,

stitched thereover, so as to form a loop, J, at that end, and it is provided with a sliding loop, K, by means of which the free end of the rein is held down thereon.

The hand-loop and rein are secured together and to the holder in the manner following, to 5 wit: The pin C is unscrewed and withdrawn until it is clear of the opening formed by the rectangular frame. The end H of the hand-loop, with the rein folded thereover, as shown in Fig.

2, is next inserted into the frame, and the pin C passed through the loop J and its threaded end screwed into the hole in the opposite side of the frame, when the several parts will bear that relation one to the other shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The ends of the rectangular frame bite 5 5 the reins when they are pulled and hold the hand loop securely thereto; and when it is desired to change the position of the said loop the rein has to be only pushed upward from the cross-pin and the other section of the rein 6o pulled down until the rein is again brought into contact with the pin, by which means the loop is rendered easy of adjustment to either lengthen or shorten the rein.

This device is very simple in construction and cheap of production, and renders the handloop of quick attachment to and adjustment on the rein.

Having described my invention, what I claim 1s 1. The rein-holder described, consisting of an arched frame and removable pin, for the purpose set forth.

2. The arched frame A, in combination with the headed and threaded pin C, substantially as set forth.

3. The arched frame A and removable pin C, in combination with a driving-rein and a hand-loop, G, as set forth.
