UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER D. DRAKE, OF SANTA F, MISSOURI.
BREAST-STRAP HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 333,734, dated January 5, 1886.
Application tiled June 10, 1885.
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER D. DRAKE, of Santa F, in'the county of Monroe and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Iniproved Breast-Strap Hook, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention consists. principally, ofa hook to be attached to the breast-strap or breaststrap slide or guard of harness for facilitating the work of attaching the neck-yoke to and detaching it from the breast-strap.
The invention also consists in pivoting the hook to the breast-strap slide or guard, and in providing the hook with a retaining-ring for locking the ring of the neck-yoke in the hook, the retaining-ring being provided with a loop to receive the holdback-strap of the harness.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the iigures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my breaststrap hook attached to a breast-strap slide or guard; and Fig. 2 is an inverted plan View of the saine, showing the preferred construction of the retaining-ring, the same being in position for closing the hook.
A represents the hook. This may be attached directly to the breast-strap of the harness, or it may be hinged or pivoted by bolt a to the breast-strap slide or guide B. The hook A has the retaining-ring O applied to it for closing the entrance to the hoolnas shown in the drawings, for retaining in the hook the neck-yoke ring D. The retaining-ring O is attached to the hook A by being passed through the hole b,1nade in the hook, as shown in Fig. l, and the ring in this instance is notched, as shown at d, so that when the ring is turned to bring the notch d in line with the outwardlyprojecting part eof the hook the ring may be lifted to open the hook, or, being open, rnay be lowered below the point eto close the hook, and turned to bring notch d out of line with point e, thus causing the ring to lock with the point e to securely retain the ring D in the Serial No. 168,275. (No model.)
hook, as it is almost impossible for notch d to get back into line with point e after the slack in the holdback-strap is taken up by bitching the traces. In most cases the retaining-ring O, besides being forn'ied with notch d,will also be formed with the loopf, into which the holdback-strap of the harness may be buckled, thns avoiding the necessity of placing the holdback-strap over the neck-yoke, as is the usual practice.
In use the hook A will' be attached to the breast-strap with the point c standing away from the tongue, so that the ring` ofthe neckyoke may be conveniently dropped into and lifted out of the hook in hitching up and unhitching the team, and by the use ofthe hook much time is saved in the labor of hitehing up and unhitehing the team,as the retaining-ring O has simply to be operated to open or close the hook and the hook attached to or detached from the neck-yoke ring, both of which may be quickly and easily done Without undoing the breast-strap or disturbing the holdback-strap. Besides this the loop f always keeps the holdback-strap at the end of the neck-yoke, so the horses niay back a load or hold it back in going down grade with the best advantage, and the hook is perfectly secure and reliable in holdingthe ring D.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The guard B and the hook A, in combination with the retaining-ring O, formed with the loop f, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. rlhe guard lhaving the hook A attached to it, in combination with the retaining-ring O, notched at d and formed with the loop f,
the hook A being formed withthe outwardlyprojecting point e, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
WALTER D. BRAKE.
