SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 465,530, dated December 22, 1891.

Application filed June 30, 1891.

To all whom t may concern:

13e it known that I, REMEMBRANCE LiNDsAY KIRBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pomeroy, in the county of Garfield and State of Vashington, have invented a new and useful Check-Hook, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in hooks for harness; and the objects in view are to provide a hook that is absolutely safe 'f rom any accidental disen gagement,which is strong and durable, easily connected and disconnected, and is adapted to all the various uses to which hooks can be applied in a harness, such as checkrein-hooks, trace-supports, duc.

. 'Vith the above objects in view the in vention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter specified, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

Referring' to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of a hook constructed in accordance with my invention, the same being adapted for use in connection with acheckren. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the hook, the same being open and shown in position it occupies just after perspective of a modiiied form of hook or where it is adapted at its shank end for connection with the strap.

In practicing my invention I construct a shank, which consists either in the threaded stud l, if it be desired to employ the hook as a checkrein-hook, or, as shown in Fig. 4, in the loop 2, adapted to be connected with astrap. The stud or loop, as the case may be, merges at its upper end in an enlarged base 3, which is reduced to form the recess or neck 4, and above the same is reduced in thickness to form the head 5. The head 5 has its edge curved, as shown, and concentrically pivoted by a transverse pin 6 to the head is the hook 7. The hook 7 is bifurcated at its rear end, so as to embrace the head, and through these bifurcations pass the pin. ceives and rides over the curved edge of the head.

In use the hook is swung to the rear and a ring 9 introduced under the free end'of the hook into the cutout portion or recess 4, forming the neck, and from thence is carried over into the hook, and the latter is swung to the front, the head 5 serving to close the entrance to the hook, the free end ot' which latter enibraces and rides over the same. It will be seen that inasmuch as the ends of the hook embrace the head said hookis prevented from being wrenched laterally out oi alignment with the head, and hence the eiiciencyof the hook destroyed. Such construction is especially essential when it is seen that the strain is borne by the hook7 which is subject to both longitudinal and lateral wrenching.

It will be seen that a hook constructed in accordance with the foregoing description may be manufactured with facility and at asmall cost, and that it is absolutely impossible for the saine after having once been locked to become accidentally disconnected.

As before stated, the hook may be used in various positions upon the harness, and will be found etiicient in all of them.

Having described my invention, what I claim is- The herein-described` improved hook, consisting of the base having means of attachment and terminatingin aperipherally-rounded iiat head, and at one side ot' the same, at its juncture with the base, provided with a cutfaway portion 4, and the hook bifurcated at its inner end to embrace the head and pivoted concent-rically therewith and at its t'ree end notched to embrace and ride over the curved edge' of the head, substantially as specified.
