Attorney I QUNITED' STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CARROLL H. JOHNSON, OF BLUE SPRINGS, MISSOURI.
HAM E-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 568,617, dated September 29, 1896.
Application filed May 11, 1896. Serial No. 591,097. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern} Be it known that I, CARROLL H. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Blue Springs, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in flame-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of referonce marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a view, partly in section, showing the invention applied. Fig. 2 is a top plan view, and Fig. 3 is a detail view.
This invention is designed to provide a hame-fastening of improved character; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates my improved fastenin g, which consists of a block or body curved on its inner face to conform to the curve in the collar and having at one end a snap-hook Y B, preferably integral therewith, for connection with the loop or ring o of one of the hames O. Extending into said body or block from the opposite end is a cavity or socket D, which extends nearly its full length and is fitted to receive therein an elongated curved tongue or arm D, which carries at its outer end a snap-hook E, designed to engage the loop or ring 0 of the hame O. I prefer to use these snap-hooks B and E instead of other fastening devices, but desire to state, however, that other suitable fastening devices may be employed.
The convex edge of the tongue or arm D is formed with a series of transverse notches cl, which present their square shoulders in the direction of the snap-hook E.
In the convex edge of the body or block is formed a seat or cavity F for a locking-dog G, the bottom of said seat or cavitybeing slotted, as indicatedat f, to permit the tooth g of the dog to engage with the notches d of the tongue or arm D. Said dog is pivoted at g near its toothed or engaging end, and its free arm is seated on a spring H, which is secured in the seat or cavity F.
When the tongue or arm is inserted into the body or block, the notches d readily pass said dog, but movement or strain in the opposite direction is resisted by the firm engagement of the dog with one of said notches, whereby said arm or tongue cannot be withdrawn except the free arm of the dog be depressed against the tension of the spring H to free the locking engagement. The series of notches provides for diiferent adjustments of said arm or tongue.
Formed on the outer or convex bend of each of the snap-hooks, at the center thereof, is a lug or projection 70, the purpose of which is to check the hames from going farther on the hooks when shoved toward each other.
K is a small slide which can be slid underneath the free end portion of the locking-dog G and thereby hold the same in engagement with the notched arm or tongue D.
The device above described forms a secure and reliable fastening and one which can be easily and quickly operated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described hame-fastening device, comprising a curved body or block, having a snap-hook at one end for engagement with one of the hames and formed with a deep socket or cavity extending into its opposite end, an elongated, curved and notched arm or tongue which engages said socket and which has at its outer end a snap-hook for engagement into the other hame, a spring-actuated locking-dog pivoted in said body or block and adapted to engage With any one of the said notches of the said arm or tongue, and a locking-slide adapted to be moved underneath the lever-arm of said dog to secure its engagement, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CARROLL n. JOHNSON. Witnesses:
