UNITED I STATES PATENT OFFICE,
NICHOLAS LAGE, OF ROCK ISLAND, ILLINOIS.
HAM E-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 416,926, dated December 10, 1889.
Application filed September 7,1889. fierial No. 323.245. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS LAGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rock Island, in the county of Rock Island and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Hallie-Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in hame-l'asteners.
The object of the present invention is to provide a hame-fastener of simple and economic construction capable of being adjusted to the size of the collar and adapted to be readily fastened and unfastened and not be liable to become accidentally loose.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved hame-fastener, showing the relative position of parts when locked. Fig. 2 is a plan View showing the position of parts preparatory to locking. Fig. 3 .is a longitudinal sectional view.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by letter, A designates the base-plate or strap of the fastener, which is constructed'of suitable metal and is slightly curved to enable it to conform to the lower portion of a horsecollar. One end of the metal strap A is pro vided with a longitudinal slot a, which extends a suitable distance along the plate or strap and is provided at both sides with a series of teeth a, which are designed to be engaged by similar teeth 1), formed upon the bottom face of an adjustable lug B. Lug B is provided with a set-screw 0, whose head engages the rear side of the strap or plate A and holds the teeth a and 1) into engagement with each other and prevents the accidental slipping of the lug. The inner face or edge I) of the lug is designed to be engaged by a swiveled link at the end of a hame, whereby the fasteneris secured thereto. By this construction the hame-fastener may be readily adjusted to adapt itself to any sized collar. The other end of the metal plate or strap A is provided with ears a between which is pivoted an end of a lever D. The lever is designed to be engaged by a hooked link E,
and is provided on its under face, near the pivotal point, with a series of transverse flanges (l, which form grooves d to receive the link. These grooves also assist in the adj ustinent of the hame-fastenerto the collar, and the link which engages them is approximately rectangular and is provided with a hook formed integral therewith and designed to engage the end of a hame. The free end of the lever is provided with a slot (1*, through which projects a staple F, that is secured to the plate or strap A, near the middle thereof, and the lever is retained in its closed position by a hook that engages the staple. The book G is pivoted to the face of the lever, and is adapted to swing into and out of engagement with the projecting portion of the staple, its swinging motion being limited by two small studs (1 projecting from the face of the lever, and the end g of the hook is shouldered, and one leg of the staple is provided with a spiral spring H, that engages the plate or strap A and the under side of the lever D and holds the shoulder of the hook into engagement with the projecting end of the staple, thereby preventing the hook G from becoming accidentally displaced.
From the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings the construction, p-
eration, and advantages of the invention will readily be understood.
\V hat I claim is- 1. The combination of a hame-fastener having one of its ends provided with alongitudinal slot and a series of teeth arranged at each side of the slot and a lug having similar teeth and provided with a set-screw to hold the teeth into engagement with each other, said lug being designed to be engaged by the link of a hame, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, in a hame-fastener, of the metal plate or strap, the lever pivotedto an end thereof and provided intermediate of its ends with a series of transverse flanges arranged between it and the plate or strap, forming grooves which are closed by the said plate or strap, the link provided with an integral hook and adapted to fit in said grooves, and suitable means for securing the end of a lever to the plate or strap, substantially as described.
3. The combination, in a hame-fastener, of the metal plate or strap, a lever pivoted to one end thereof and having its free end pr0- vided with a slot, a staple secured to the plate or strap and arranged to project through the slot of the lever, and a hook pivoted to theface of the lever and designed to engage the staple, substantially as described.
4. The combination, in a haine-fastener,
with a link, of the metal plate or strap, the
lever pivoted thereto and provided with the slot in its free end, the staple secured to the plate or strap and arranged to projectthrough the slot, a hook pivotedjto the lever, and a spring arranged upon one of the legs of the staple and adapted to hold the hook into engagement with the staple, substantially as described.
5. The combination, in a h'anie-fastener, with a link, of the metal plate or strap, the
lever pivoted thereto and provided with a slot in its free end, a staple secured to the strap or plate and arranged to project through said slot, the hook pivoted to the lever and having its ends 9 shouldered, the studs (1 projecting from the lever, arranged upon each side of the hook, and the spiral spring coiled around one of the legs of the staple, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed mysignatu re in presence of two Witnesses. I
"NICHOLAS LAGE.
