PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM M. RI-IEUBOTTOM, OF CORREOTIONVILLE, IOWA.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 728,979, dated May 26, 1903.
Application filed July-28, 1902.
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM M. RHEUBOT- TOM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oorrectionville, in the county of Woodbury and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Overcheck Crown-Piece Attachments; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon ,which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in harnesses; and the main object of the invention is to provide a novel, cheap, and handy means for slidingly attaching the overcheck of the harness to the crown-piece in a detachable manner. This object I attain by the novel construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top view of a crown-piece and overcheck with my improvement applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line a a in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings by reference-numerals, 3 designates the strap of the bridle, which crosses the horses head back of the ears and is usually called the crown-piece. 4 is the rear end of the winker-brace. This is held adjustably in the buckle 5, secured by the strap 6 to the crown-piece 3.
Upon the crown-piece and the strap 6 I secure by the rivets 7 a metallic piece 8, preferably cast of malleable iron or brass. This piece or attachment 8 is provided upon its middle with two inwardly-pointing hooks 9 and at each end with an eye or loop 10.
11 designates parts of the overcheck having the eye 12, adapted to go on the hook of the saddle-piece and being otherwise of common construction.
The parts 11 of the overcheck are guided- Serial No. 117 280. (No model.)
- by a rivet, as 15 to the right in the drawings,
and having their inner ends provided with holes 16, adapting them to be placed upon the hooks 9, on which they are further retained by the insertion of the end of the winkerstrap 4 between them and the hooks 9. Before the straps 17 are thus secured on the hooks they are passed through the metallic loops 10, so that the loops 13 may be reduced to a neat size and held firmly in position.
Whenever the overcheck is to be removed or detached from the loops 13, it is only necessary to unhook the straps 17 from the hooks 9 and slip them out of the guides 10. In this manner the overcheck cannot possiblybecome unhitched from the crown-piece accidentally, and still it is easily attached and detached when desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with the crown-piece 3, of the metallic piece 8 secured thereon and having the loops 10 at the ends and the hooks 9 near the middle, the straps 17 securedto the crown -piece beyond the metallic piece, the same forming the guiding-loops 13 for the overcheck, and having their free ends passed through the metallic loops or eyes 10 and hitched onto the hooks 9.
2. The combination with the crown-piece 3, of the metallic piece 8 secured thereon and having the loops 10 at the ends and the hooks 9 near the middle, the straps 17 secured to the crown-piece beyond the metallic piece, the same forming the guiding-loops 13 for the overcheck, and having their free ends passed through the metallic loops or eyes 10 and hitched onto the hooks 9, and the winkerbrace 4 inserted between the hooks 9 above the ends of the straps 17. I
3. The combination with the crown-piece 3, of the strap 6 secured centrally thereto and having the buckle 5 in its front end, the winker-brace 4t adjustably inserted in the buckle and having its free end normally extending rearwardly across the crown-piece; the metallic bar 8 secured upon the crownpiece and bridging across the strap 6; said onto the hooks 9 below the winker-brace, subpiece or bar 3 having nearits middle the hooks stantially as and for the purpose set forth. 1o
