STIRRUP.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 559,046, dated April 28, 1896. Application filed November 2, 1895. Serial No. 567,735. (No model.)

To all whom t may concern:

Be it knownthat I, EPHEAIM M. TURNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort lVorth, in the county of Tarrant and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Stirrup, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in stirrups; and the object of my inventionis to construct a light and strong stirrup adapted to use for light saddles and also heavy stocksaddles; and it consists in the improved construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described,and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Figure l represents a front or rear view. Fig. 2 represents a front or rear view of a portion of the stirrup covered. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the horizontal bar, showing the slot in same. Fig. el is a view of one side of the stirrup. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the bottom. Fig. 6 is a cross-section of one of the sides, showing cover on.

The sides a are oval, the narrow edges being on the outside. These sides are slotted for the double purpose of making the stirrup light and for lacing where the stirrup is to be covered.

The stirrup has ears g, extending abovethe supporting-bar B, for holding the leathers in place and for preventing the stirrup from turning. The sides with the ears have the appearance of spoon-handles. The barB has a slot, which divides the bar into two parts b and b. For narrow leather the part?) is used. For broad leather, such as is used on stocksaddles, the whole bar is used, the leather extending entirely7 around the bar. This slot makes the stirrup lighter, and is also used for lacing when the stirrup is being covered. The parts ZJ and b are semicircular in crosssection, and the whole bar is substantially oval in cross-section. The bottom c is broad in the middle and tapers to the sides. The oval sides a merge into broader portions joining the bottom, leaving shoulders a'. The convex sides of the bottom prevent the covering from slipping to one side. The shoulders a prevent the covering from slipping when a straight bottom is used.

The stirrup is cast in one piece, and may be covered with leather or other suitable material. The object of the covering is to prevent heat or cold from the foot, but the stirn rup may be used without covering. The covering may be one, two, or three pieces, and is secured by lacing with any suitable material. On the sides of the stirrup the covering is flush with the metal, as shown in Fig. 6.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. A stirrup having sides with slots out therein and provided with shoulders below said slots for holding the covering in place, a foot-rest, and a supporting-bar integral with said sides, a slot being cut in said bar, the parts of said bar opposite said slot being semicircular in cross-section and providing bars for leathers of different widths.

2. A stirrup having a foot-rest broad in the middle and tapering toward the ends, covering made to conform to the contour of said rest, slotted sides oval in cross-section and integral with said rest, shoulders on the lower parts of said sides, said covering being held in place by said shoulders and the wide and narrow portions of said rest, and a supporting-bar oval in cross-section and integral with said sides.

3. A stirrup having slotted sides oval in cross-section, covering laced to said sides through slots therein, a supporting-bar integral with said sides, said bar being divided intermediate its length by means of a slot, the parts opposite said slot forming bars for supporting leathers of different sizes, and a foot-rest having a wide middle portion and tapering ends, and a suitable covering for said rest.

4. A stirrup consisting of slotted sides having shoulders on the lower parts and ears integral with the upper parts thereof, said ears holding `the stirrup-leathers in place, said sides being strengthened by constructing same oval in cross-section, a straight supporting-bar oval in cross-section and divided into two parts, said parts forming bars for leathers of different sizes, covering laced on said sides through slots therein, and a foot-rest having a covering flush with the edges thereof, said covering being held in place by the narrow and wide portions of said rest and by said shoulders.
