IMPROVEMENT IN STIRRUPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [43,732, dated October 14, 1873; application filed March 13, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NnLs O. THOMPSON, of San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Stirrup; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention consists of a stirrup which is provided with a swinging-foot portion, having revolving bars, by means of which it is adapted to permit the foot of the rider to be readily disengaged in case of accident, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawing, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved stirrup, and Fig. 2 a partial view in elevation.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will now proceed to describe it more fully.
A represents the top portion of the stirrup, which is provided with the transverse loop G adapted to receive the saddle-strap. B B represent swinging-link pieces, by means of which the topportion A is connected to the forked foot pieces 0 G, which are united by the bars D D, which are supported in such manner as to revolve freely.
From this description it will be understood that in case of accident the foot piece is free to swing, and the bars D D to revolve, so that it is rendered impossible to hold the foot of the overthrown rider.
