UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN O. TAYLOR, OF SPRINGER, TERRITORY OF NEIN MEXICO.
STIRRU P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,179, dated January 15, 1889.
Application filed Julyr 14, 1888. Serial No. 279,929. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern/k Be it known that I, JOHN O. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing' at Springer, in the county of Colfax and Territory of New Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stirrups; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to stirrups, and has for its object to construct and combine the several parts so that the'stirrup will have not only strength and durability, but also freedom of movement in all directions by reason of a universal joint applied as hereinafterparticularly described and afterward claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
Figure l is a front viewof the stirrup. 2 is a vertical section through the saine.
In the drawings, the letterA designates the foot-piece, preferably made circular in form, and of a metal loop, B, covered with leather, C, and having an extra strip or piece of leather, D, applied where the foot rests and secured thereto by strings E or other suitable means. Around the upper portion of the foot-piece there is placed a sleeve, F, in which the footpiece is free to swing back and forth. This sleeve is formed with the upwardly-extending pin or stud G, which extends through the strap-plate Il and fits loosely therein, so that the stirrup will be free to turn on an Aaxis at right angles to that on which it swings back and forth. By such construction there is formed a universal joint, so that. the stirrup is free to swing in any direction.
A washer or plate, I, preferably secured rigidly to the under side of the strap-plate I-I, serves to give strength to the joint, as does also the washer or plate J, placed around the pin or stud G above the top face of the strapplate H. The head of the stud is preferably riveted or upset, so as to hold the parts together. These washers or plates also serve to take strain from off the pin or stud.
Fig.
The strap-plate is preferably made of copper, and thus rusting and binding at the connection with the stud or pin are prevented. 5o
Through the upwardly-extending portions a of the strap-plate is passed the bolt K, around which, between the upright portions a, is placed the sleeve or roller L, preferably of metal, to receive the stirrup-strap.
The stirrup constructed as described is cheap to manufacture, strong and durable in use, and affords the greatest ease to the rider, as it is free to turn in any direction calculated best to serve the movements of the foot of the rider.
I have described the simplest and best form of the several parts and their application; but it is obvious that changes can be made therein without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having described my invention and set forth its merits, what I claim isl. In a stirrup, the combination, with the foot-piece, of the sleeve fitted around the upper portion thereof, so that the foot-piece will be free to swing therein, and provided with the upwardly-extending stud or pin, and the strap-plate fitted loosely around said stud or pin, so that the foot-piece may turn freely at right angles to the direction in which it swings, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a st-irrup, the combination of the footpiece, the sleeve fitted around the upper portion thereof, so that the foot-piece will be free to swing therein, and provided with the upward ly-extending pin or stud, the strap-plate fitted around said stud or pin, so that the stud may turn therein, and the washers or plates fitted around said stud or pin above and below the strap-plate, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix in v signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN C. TAYLOR.
