To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM G. LUTTIN- GER, citizen of the United States, residing at Jerome, in the county of Yavapai and State of Arizona, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Stirrups, of which the following is a specific-a: tion.

This invention relates to stirrups and more particularly to a safety stirrup.

The primary object of this invention resides in the provision of a stirrup whereby the possibility of dragging the rider of a horse will be eliminated should he be thrown from the saddle.

A further object of this invention resides in the provision of a stirrup having a coacting multiplicity of elements that readily perform the functions of the common stirrup under normal riding conditions, the same being susceptible to separation should the rider be accidentally thrown from the saddle.

With these and other objects in view this invention resides in certain novel features of construction and combination of coacting elements which will be fully set forth in the specification, illustrated in the drawing and pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that certain changes in detail may be resorted to as come within the scope of the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a side view of a stirrup constructed in accordance with this invention with the foot rest thereof shown in full lines in its normal position and in dotted lines in an upset position;

Referring more particularly to the present embodiment of this invention the numeral 5 designates the strap engaging sleeve of the stirru 6. This strap engaging sleeve has an aperture therethrough for the reception of a pin 7 or the like in order that hangers 8 can be pivotally supported at opposite ends of the sleeve. Integrally formed on the central portion of said sleeve is a downwardly projecting keeper 9 in the lower surface of which is provided a groove 10 for a purpose to be hereinafter set forth.

The aforesaid hangers are formed from any sultable material but in this instance they are made from a resilient metal that is bent outwardly to provide suflicient space therebetween for bending their end portions upon themselves to provide upwardly directed resilient arms 11. These arms are provided as at 12 with apertures which are intersected by vertically disposed grooves 13 that gradually incline outwardly from their points of intersection.

Supported by the arms 11 is a substantially rectangular frame which forms what will be hereinafter referred to as a foot rest 14. Permanently secured to the sides of this foot rest are trunnions 15 which have their outer ends beveled so that their lower outer edges will be in advance of the upper outer edges for engaging the aforesaid apertures in the arms 11. NVith the outer ends of the trunnions so beveled, the upper edges thereof will be permitted to wedge the resihent arms 11 apart after an abnormal strain on the stirrup has caused the lug 16 carried by the foot rest to disengage its keeper 9; thus it is apparent that as the trunnions rotate and slide downwardly, the arms 11 will yield and as soon as the said trunnions are beyond the grooves the foot rest will free itself from the hangers.

WVith this invention as herein set forth it is manifest that a stirrup is produced which is cheap of manufacture, eflicient in performing its functions and neat in appearance.

Thus having fully described this inven tion what I claim is:

1. In a stirrup of the character described. the combination of a sleeve, hangers support ed thereby, resilient upturned arms on said hangers having oppositely disposed apertures therein intersected by vertically disposed grooves, a foot rest, trunnions on said foot rest with their outer lower edges seated in said apertures and their outer upper edges terminating at the bases of said grooves, a keeper on said sleeve with a groove in its lower surface, and a lug on said foot nor-- mally resting in said groove in said keeper.

2. A stirrup of the class described comprising a pair of spaced hangers havingtheir lower end portions returned to afford spring arms, said arms being provided with openings, a foot rest provided with trunnions seated within the apertures of the arms, said trunnions having their outer ends beveled, and means for normally holding rio the foot rest against-rotation about its trim openings; a foot "rest' provided with trunnions seated within the apertures of the arms, said trunnions having their outer ends beveled, and means for normally holding the foot rest against rotation about its trunnions, the innerfaces of the arms being prof'vided With longitudinally disposed grooves intersecting the apertures therein.

4:. A stirrup of'the class described comprising a pair of spaced hangers having their lower end portions returned to afford spring arms, said arms being provided with openings, a foot rest provided with trunnions seated Within the apertures of the arms, said trunnions having their outer ends beveled, and means for normally holding the foot rest against rotation about its trunnions, the outer faces of the arms being provided with longitudinally disposed grooves intersecting the apertures therein, each of said grooves at opposite sides of the aperture having its base portions inclined toward the aperture.
