SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 475,374, dated May 24, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known thatl, LEE ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paris,in the county of Lamar and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stirrups; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has relation to improvements in stirrups; and it consistsin the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.

The objects of my invention are to provide a stirrup of simple andinexpensive construction, to form the buckle for attaching the side straps integral with the hanger in such position that the stirrup will hang at right angles to the saddle-skirts, and, further, to hinge or pivot the footrest at one end to the hanger and supported at its opposite end by means of a spring-controlled catch that automatically releases the foot-rest by means of a lever and prevents the riders foot from hanging in the stirrup and the rider being dragged should he be thrown from his horse.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a stirrup embodying my invention, partly in section; Fig. 2, a side view of same, partly in section, showing foot-rest disengaged from the hanger at one end; Fig. 3, an edge view of the stirrup.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, A designates a metallic hanger consisting of the legs a and a, meeting at their upper ends at the enlarged portion or head a said portion being cut away or slotted, as at a a, and a and within said cut-away portion is left a circular transversely-disposed portion B, said portion being provided centrally with peripheral groove 5, adapted to receive the ringportion 0 of the buckle-tongue O. s

D designates the side strap, which is passed downwardly through the openings a and a and upwardly through the opening a and engages the tongue 0. The opposite end of the end with perforated ears or lugs 6, between which perforated lugs is secured by means of a pin 6' the leg a of the hanger A. The footrest E is further provided upon its lower face with a recess F, within which fits and Works a bar or catch J, said catch being provided with a longitudinal opening f through which and the foot-rest E passes a pin f for confining said catch Within the recess. The recess F terminates at one end in a rectangular opening G, down through which passes the leg a of the hanger A, said leg having formed near its end a projection which is adapted to engage the reduced extended end H of the catch f.

In order that the portion H of the catch f may be held in engagement with the projection g, I employa coiled spring I, which abuts against a shoulder on the catch f at one end and its opposite end abutting againsta shoulder f of the recess F.

To readily permit of the projection g on the leg a being disengaged from the projection H, thereby allowing the foot-rest to assume the position shown in Fig. 2, I employ a lever J, fulcrumed near its lower end by a pin to the leg a, its short armj passing down by the side of the projection g and is designed to bear against the outer edge of the projection H. The upper arm J is bent for a portion of its way to conform to the shape of the leg at. It is then given a downward and upward curve, as at L, for a purpose presently explained.

The operation of niyimproved stirrup,taken in connection with the above description and accompanying drawings, may be briefly described as follows: As before stated, owing to the manner of locating the buckle, the stirrup at all times hangs at right angles to the saddleskirts, and should the rider be thrown from his horse and by accident his foot hang in the stirrup anyupward pressure whatever brought to bear upon the lever J at L will cause the arm j to move inward, as shown, and with it release the leg a from engagement with the catch and allow the foot-rest to assume the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3.

Having thus described my invention, whatI claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s

1. In a stirrup, the combination of the hanger constructed as described, the foot-rest pivoted to one leg of the hanger at one end and adapted to engage the opposite leg of said hanger by a sliding catch carried by the footrest, and a lever fulcrumed on the hanger and adapted to release .the catch and foot-rest, substantially as described.

2. In a stirrup, the combination of the hanger constructed substantially as shown, the foot-rest pivoted at one end to one leg of the hanger, its opposite end engaging a stop formed 011 the hanger through the med um of a slotted spring-controlled catch carried by the foot-rest, and a lever fulcrumed on the hanger and adapted to release the catch and foot-rest, substantially as described.
