Be it known that I, GNTHER FRIDRroH CARL SCHRTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Redding, in the county of Shasta and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements ina Combined Buckle and Snap Hook, as set forth in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a combined buckle and snap hook embodying my invention, and showing a strap connected therewith. Fig. 2, is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.

My invention relates to devices known as combined buckles and snap hooks, and it consists of the construction and .combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same I will now describe its construction and indicate the manner in which the same is carried out.

Referring now to the drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, A represents a frame or rectangular loop which forms the body of the buckle, the said frame consisting of dat side bars a joined together at one end by a heavy cross-bar b, while the opposite ends are curved upwardly and connected by a flat cross bar c the plane of which is above the cross bar Z2; a second flat bar CZ joining the side bars at the lower edges on a horizontal plane below the bar c and on a vertical plane at one side of the said bar c. This construction forms a guide or loop for the strap B as shown. In the open space between the bars h and cl are two cross bars g and h, the former being near the lower edges of the side bars and the latter being near the upper edges of said bars as shown in Fig. 2. Upon the cross bars g, h, the eyes Zand m of the tongues C and D are mounted and extend in opposite directions, with the free end of the tongue D adapted to rest upon the top of the cross bar d to resist the outward movement of the tongue, and the free end of the other tongue C adapted to engage a groove or recess n in the under face of the cross bar b whereby the said tongue is securely seated against inward movement. The cross bar b has formed integrally with it and projecting from the center of its outer side, a bar E Whose outer end is formed with a hook-E and whose body portion is formed with a longitudinal slot or opening o between the walls of which a tongue or catch Gis pivotally mounted with its free end adapted to close the throat of the hook E and to bear against the nose of the latter. A spring plate H secured at one end in the cross bar b, or in a block set within the end of the slot o, extends outwardly and bears under the tongue or catch G to cause the same to normally close the throat of the hook E. The strap or connection B is adapted to be passed into the loop formed by the cross bars d and e and is then carried around the cross bar g and thence forward, and the free end of the tongue D passed through a hole made in the strap. The other strap B shown, is also passed through the loop formed by the cross bars d and @and is carried to and passed around the cross bar h,and the tongue C passed through a hole in it; and from said cross bar h the free end of the strap is carried along the upper fold of the strap B as shown whereby the several folds of the strap lie one upon the other and bind closely together when a strain is brought upon said strap. y

Adevice constructed as shown and described has but few parts and no projecting points to engage other parts of the harness or to injure the horse.

The operation of the snap hook is well understood and any desired ring, loop or like device may be secured to it.
