HAME AND COLLAR PASTE-NEE.
NOQ 548,761. Patented Oct. 29, 1895.

PETER MARTIN PAULSON, OF LE GRAND, IOWA.
HAME AND COLLAR FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 548,761, dated October 29, 1895.
Application filed April 16,1895.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, PETER MARTIN PAULSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Le Grand, in the county of Marshall and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Hame and Collar Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in hame and collar fasteners.
The objects of the present invention are to simplify and improve the construction of fasteners for collars and hames and to provide a novel form of device adapted to be applied to the lower adjacent ends of a horse-collar in such manner that said ends of the collar may be quickly and easily coupled or uncoupled when desired.
To this end the invention consists in certain novel features and details of construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully de' scribed, illustrated in the drawings, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section through the lower adjacent ends of a horse-collar with my improved fastening device applied. Fig. 2 is an enlarged bottom plan view of the'improved fastener. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the members of the fastening device. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the other member.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.
The improved collar and hame fastening device, which I will now proceed to describe, comprises two members, designated by the numerals 1 and 2, which may be cast or otherwise formed from brass, steel, or other metal, according to the desire of the manufacturer. These two members are each provided with two or more perforations'which are adapted to receive rivets, by means of which they are secured to the abutting ends of a horse-collar. For convenience sake and in order to facilitate the engagement and disengagement of the abutting ends of the horse-collar the member 1 of the fastening device is preferably secured to the end of the collar on the right-hand side of the animal and the member 2 to the lower end of the left-hand side of the collar, as shown.
Pivotally connected with the member 1 is Serial No. 545,756- (No model.)
a pivoted latch 3, which is provided with an enlarged and perforated end, as indicated, from which it tapers rearwardly, where it is pivotally mounted upon a pin 4, passing through aligned perforations in the body of the fastener and said latch. The socket 5, in which said latch is located, corresponds in shape and depth to the portion of the latch 3, which is located therein, so that the lower face of the body of the fastener and the latch will be flush and even. At its free end the latch is provided with a perforation 6, the inner wall of which at one side is inclined, as indicated at 7. The front edge of the latch 3 is also beveled off or inclined, as shown at 8,,'
and is further provided with an extension or lip 9, by means of which, said latch may be lifted- The other member of the fastening device is grooved in its lower face, as shown at 10,
thereby forming a socket for the reception of the free end of the latch 3, and also forming a spur or projection 11, adapted to enter the perforation 6 in the latch for holding the parts firmly together. The latch 3is normally held'in engagement with the projection or spur 11 by means of an actuating-spring 12,
secured to the inner face of the pivoted latch 3 and bearing against the body ofthe fastening-plate member 1, as shown. In order to relieve the latch 3 from side strain, one of the parts of the device, preferably the member 2, is provided with a stout pin 13, projecting from its inner end adjacent to the member 1, and the latter member is provided with a socket or perforation adapted to receive said pin. This forms a stout connection between the two members of the device and takes con,- siderable of the strain from the pivoted latch 3.
Each member of the device is further provided with aloop 14, said loops being furnished for the purpose of receiving the lower ends of straps attached to the hames. An additional loop 15,-attached to the member 2 on-the left-hand side of the collar, provides for the attachment of the backhold-strap,-
which extends backward to the girth.
In operation in order to fasten the collar around the animals neck all that is necessary is to insert the pin 13 in the corresponding socket in the opposite member and push the two parts of the device together, when the the collar separated. By reasonof the hame being attached to the collar by means of the straps and loops 14 referred to above it will be apparent that all that is required touni harness the horse is to unbuckle the crupper and girth, when the entire harness may be lifted from the horse and carried at one time to the rack, upon which it is hung. By means of the device described a horse can be.l iar-. nessed or unharnessed in much less time than heretofore. The fastener is very simple and inexpensive and will be found very efficient...
I and convenient in practice.-
It .will be apparentthat various changesin the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted towithout de-.
parting from the principle or sacrificingany of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. A hame andpcollar fastener comprising two sliding members, one of which is-provided with a pin and the other with a socket.
for the reception of said pin, a pivoted and spring actuated latch connected with one of said members and having its swinging end roundedand apertured, and a projecting spur or catch formed on the other member by making a segmental groove or socket in the face of said member, said groove or socket corresponding in shape to and. being adapted to receive the swinging end of the latch, substantially as described.
2. A hame and collar fastener, comprising two sliding members, one of which is formed with a stay pin and the other with a socket for the reception of said pin, a swinging latch pivoted at one end to one of said members and seated in a facial recess or groove therein so as to lie substantially flush therewith and projecting at its opposite end beyond the abuttingend of. said member, said-latch being roundedatuits swinging end and also bev-- eled and apertu-redas described, and a catch projection on the opposing member adapted to enter theaperture of thelatch, said projection being established by forming a segmentalgroove in said member corresponding to the shape of and adapted to receive the rounded swinging end of the pivoted latch, substantially as specified.
In testimonythat I claim the foregoing as my ownI have hereto affixed mysignaturein thepresence of. two witnesses.
PETER MARTIN PAULSON.
