UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. JOHNSON AND ORSON J. SMITH, OF FARMER CITY, ILLINOIS.
HAM E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 480,663, dated August 9, 1892. Application filed April 2, 1892. Serial No. 427,537. (No model.)
To aZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM I-I. JOHNSON and ORSON J. SMITH, citizens of the United States, residing at Farmer City, in the county of De Witt and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Haines; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention has reference to improvements in hannes; and it consists, essentially, in providing the outside of the hame with a vertical series of ears having suitable intervals between them for the insertion of a draftclip, and in forming a'vertical slot in the side of the hame directly in front of the line of said series of ears, and forming on the lower sur-I face of the draft-clip near its forward end a hook or iiange to engage the rear wall of said slot. The draft-clip is provided atits rear end with a suitable opening for the engagement therewith of the tug-clip, and extending forward from such opening and communicating therewith is formed a longitudinal slot, adapted t0 be passed down over one of said ears.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective of a portion of a hame provided with our improvement. Fig4 2 is an enlarged detail of the section of the haine to .which our improveementis applied. Fig. 3 is a perspective of the draft-clip.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
AS our invention pertains, simply, to the attaching of the tug or. trace to the haine, and the residue of the latter, together with its upper and lower fastenings, can be of any of the usual kinds, we do not deem it necessary to show or describe any more of the haine than will serve to clearly illustrate the construction and operation of our improvement.
A is a metallic hame, on lthe outer surface of which is formed a vertical series of ears B, seated parallel with each other and transversely of the hame A.
C C are the intervals between the ears B, and such intervals, together with the corresponding areas D, above and below the end ears, respectively, are recessed slightly below the general plane of the outside of the hame. A vertical slot E is formed through the hame A, parallel with and adjacent to the front side of the ears B.
F is the draft-clip, in the rear portion of which is formed, transversely, an opening G, in which, in case of leather tugs, the tug-clip can be seated, and in the case of chain traces the latter can be hooked or otherwise attached. Extending from the front margin of the opening G to near the front end of the clip F is a horizontal slot H, through which in placing the clip F in position any one of the ears B can be optionally projected. On the lower surface of the clip F and'nearits forward end is formed integral with said clip the hook J, adapted when the clip F is placed over one of the ears B to engage the rear wall K of the slot E. By making the rear surface of the hook slightly undercut, as shown in Fig. 3, it will engage witlL the Wall of the slot, which may also be slightly undercut, if desired, to correspond with the hook Without the outward pressure of the hook, which would result if the wall of the slotand the hook were beveled or inclined. Pin-openings L are formed in a vertical line through the upper portion of the ears B, above the plane of the outer side of the clip F when the latter is seated on the hame, and by the insertion of the pin, bolt, or cotter M through the openings L after the clip is placed said clip is held by said cotter against casual removal. On the outer side of the clip F are formed two lugs N, which abut at their front surfaces against the cotter M, and thereby prevent any casual forward movement of the clip F, which might disengage the hook J. The draft on the clip F is borne partly by the front end of the slot H, abutting against the front side of the bestrided ear B, and partly by the engagement of the hook J against the wall K of the Slot E. By the removal of the cotter M the clip F can be placed upon any one of the ears B, and thereby the altitude of the attachment of the tug to the haine may vary, as may be desired, to accommodate horses of dierent heights or the variant heights of the rear attachmentof the tug under different conditions.
Our invention can be applied to a wooden IOO hame by making the section including the ears B, areas C, and slot E in adistinct and separate plate to be couutersun'k or otherwise attached to the exterior of the wooden hame.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to Secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
l. The combination, with a haine provided upon its outer surface with a series of laterallyprojecting perforated ears and having a vertical slot in front of said ears, of a tug-clip adapted to be removably secured upon any one of said ears, said clipbeing provided with an opening at the rear end for the reception of the tug, and the front end being provided with a slot for engaging with the ears of the haine, and also provided with a hook upon its l under surface for engaging with the rear wall ofthe slot in the haine, and means for preventing the forward movement of the clip, and a cotter through the perforations of the eartshoutside of the clip, substantially as.l set for 2. The combination, with a haine provided L upon its outer surface with a series of laterallyprojecting perforated ears and having a vertical slot in front of the ears, atug-clip adapted to be removably secured upon any one of l said ears, said clip being provided at its front end with a slot for engaging with the ears, and with a hook upon its under surface for engaging with the rear wall of the slot in the hame, and having an upwardly-proj ectiug lug .upon each side of the slot upon the front end of the clip, and the rear portion of the clip being provided with an lopening for the reception of the tug, and-a cotter through the perforations iin the ears in front of the outwardly-projecting lugs of the clip, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof weafxour signatures in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM H. JOHNSON. ORSON J. SMITH.
