To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN HOLMES EMER- SON, of St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and. State of Missouri, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Horse-Collar Fasteners; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

This invention has for its object the providing of a safe and economical means for fastening horse-collars about the neck of an animal.

The nature of the invention consists in two metal plates riveted to the ends of the throat of the collar, one being provided with a vibrating latch or billet, and the other with a rotating hook or catch adapted to engage the said latch, whereby a very complete and effective fastening is produced.

It also consists in spaced slots formed in the billet, by means of which the collar may be fitted to the necks and shoulders of animals of different formations.

It furthermore consists in an upright ledge upon the front ends of the plates aforesaid, which prevents the hame-strings from slipping off the collar, all as hereinafter shown and described.

In the annexed drawings, the letter A designates an ordinary horsecollar, the withers of which are centrally divided, as shown at a, Fig. 1. Upon each side of this dividingline is secured a metallic plate. These plates are designated in the drawings by the letters B B. Their inner edges are flush with the edges of the collar, and they conform to the curvature of the parts of the same upon which they are fastened. Each of these plates is provided, upon its outer edge, with an erect stop, b, the purpose of which will hereinafter appear.

Upon the under side of the withers of the collar is a stout leather shield, N, secured at one end to the collar, and extending, when the said collar is in use, beyond the joint of the top thereof. This shield effectually protects the neck of the animal from the effects of the rubbing of the plates and withers of the collar, which otherwise would wear olf the hair at this point, and perhaps create galls.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination, with' a divided horsecollar, of the metallic plates B B, adapted toreach entirely across the top of the collar, and
