Description

C. H. ALLEN.
Guards for Harness Hames.
No.136,403, Patentedmarc'hfnn v y Z UNITED STATES PATENT DEEICE.
COTTOl\T H. ALLEN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN GUARDS FOR HARNESS-HAMES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,403. dated March 4, 1873.
To all uhom it may coincer/n:
Be it known that I, COTTON H. ALLEN, of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented an Improved Guard for Harness-Eames; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side View of a collar and hames having my improvement applied to the latter. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through one of the hames and one side of the collar, where the draw-clip of the trace-strap is attached to the hame.
Similar letters of reference indicate -corresponding parts in the two igures.
The object of this invention is to prevent horse-collars from being worn out at those points where the traces or the trace-clips cross the collars, by the employment of a guard or protector, which is hinged to the hames in such manner that it will adapt itself to horse-collar cushions of any size whatever, as will be hereinafter explained.
The following description of my invention will enable others skilled in the art to understand it.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents one of the llame-bars, which is constructed and applied to the collar B in the usual well-known manner. C represents a guard, which is a piece of metal or other material of any suitable shape or size, that is hinged at b to a plate, a. This plate a is secured to the outer edge of each hame-bar A by means of a draft-staple, c; those portions of which staple which enter the harnebar are somewhat reduced, so that when their ends are clinched they rigidly hold the plate a, to which the guard Gis hinged. To the staple c the trace D is attached by means of a drawclip, g, in the usual well-known manner.
It will be seen from the above description that the guard C' lies between the draw-clip g and the back portion or belly of the collar, and thus prevents the collar from being rapidly Worn out at this point; and, while this is the case, the said guard will accommodate itself to collars of various sizes.
Having described my invention', whatIclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1sl
The hinged guard C, in combination with the hame-bar A, substantially as described.
COTTON H. ALLEN.
