rennan w. JONES, on SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
HoRsE-ooLLAR PROTECTOR.
$PECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 303,224, dated August 5, 1884.
Application filed J uno 30, 1884.
To all whom it may concern:
'Be it known that I, RICHARD \V. J ONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar and Trace Pro tectors, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a view of my invention applied to the hanie and trace. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the plate, and Fig. 3 is a view of a modification. 7 l
My invention relates to a shaft-plate to be applied at one end to the hame-staple and at the other to the traceclip, or directly to the trace; and it consists of a plate made concave on its inner or under side to fit the collar, with an eye at one end, through which the hamestaple is passed, and either with a slot or loop for the trace-clip at the other end. At the thin endis a screw-roller, over which the trace is stitched, as will be hereinafter more fully described. i
In the drawings like letters of reference in dieate corresponding parts in the different views.
Ais the hame, and a. thehamc-staple,which are of the ordinary construction.
B is the trace, and b the traCeclip, (see Fig. 1,) which are also of the usual form.
0 represents the'plate. It is provided at one end with the loop or eye a. This loop 0 projects above the outer or upper surface of the plate, and through it the hams-staple is applied, and thus secured to the halne. The under side of the plate is made concave to fit the collar, asshown in Fig. 2, and the outer edges are flanged at 0 c to prevent the plate from cutting the collar. W'hen the trace is provided with the clip b, a key-hole slot, 0, is formed in the back end of the plate. The clip is passed through this slot and secured to the trace in any suitable manner. It is not necessary that the traceclip should be used, however, as instead of the slot 0' the plate {No model.)
may be provided with two rearwardly-projecting arms or lugs, which are perforated or screw-tapped, and a bolt or screw carrying a roller is inserted therein. The trace is then sewed around this roller, and the clip I) is dis pensed with; or the lugs can be connected by a cross-bar integral with the lugs.
It has been customary heretofore to pass the clip through the haniestaple and then rivet it to the trace, and in what is known as a square staple to sew the trace into the sta ple, or to sew the trace so as to for1n a loop. and then slide a bolt through it. these methods the clip draws over the collar, and there is great liability of the trace break ing at the end of the clip in a short time. These objections are entirely overcome by my improvement. The plate forms a protection for the collar, and the shaftstrain isrcnioved from both collar and trace.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- V 1. A. sl1aftplatc for hames, concave on its under side, and with a loop or eye projecting from its outer surface at one end for the haniestaple, and with a slot or roller-bar at its other end for the trace or trace-clip, substantially as described.
2. A shaft-plate for hames, concave on its under side, and provided with the loop 0, the side flanges, c e, and the key-hole slot 0, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of the haine A, provided With staple Z1, the shaft-plate, made concave on its under side, and with a loop or eye projecting from its outer surface at one end, and with a slot or roller-bar at the other end, and the trace, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof Iaflix my signatnrein presence of two witnesses.
RICHARD W. J ONES.
