TERRET FOR HARNESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 297,033, dated April 15, 1884.

To alt whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HARRY F. TOWNSEND and LEON A. TOWNSEND, both citizens of the United States, of Avon, in the county ofFulton and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Terrets for Harness; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is afront view of ourimproved terret for harness. Fig. 2 is aside view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a detail View.

Our invention has relation to that class of terret-s for harness which are provided with a spring-catch upon the side for the reception of the reins or the hitching-strap; and it consists in the detailed construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, theletter A indicates the harness-saddle, into which the terret B is screwed or otherwise secured in the usual manner,and the terret is of the usual construction, but is provided at the lower end of one side with two projecting perforated lips, O, through which passesapin, D, upon which a clamping-lever, E, curved or bent to conform to the shape of the side of the terret, is pivoted. The lower end of this clamping-lever bears against aspring, F, which is secured to the same and to the shank of the terret, forcing the upper end of the clamping-lever against the side of the terret.
It will be seen that the reins may be inserted and clamped between the clampinglever and the side of the terret, thus doing away with the inserting of the reins through the terret and tying them together,which is now usually done, and which is very apt to break the reins and to cause them to be worn out before their time, and when driving the hitching-strap may likewise be clamped in the said clamp, holding it so that it may readily be removed when it is desired to use it. if terrets are not used, the clamping-lever may be pivoted upon a plate, G, as shown in Fig. 3,whicl1 plate may be fastened upon the back-strap of the harness or upon the saddle, the clamping-lever acting in the same manner and for the same purpose.
We are aware that it is not broadly new to construct terrets with curved spring-clamps upon the side of the ring, and we do not wish to claim such construction broadly; but
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The combination of a .terret having two perforated lips upon the lower end of one side, a lever curved to conform to the shape of the side of the terret and pivoted between the lips, and a spring bearing against the lower end of the lever and against the shank of the terret, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
