PATENT QFFIOE.

IMPROVEMENT IN HALTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 220,498. dated October 14, 1879 application filed February 28, 1879.
my halter; Fig. 2, a sectional view, showing the latch or fastening; Fig. 3, a sect-ion illustrating the manner in which the parts are rigidly connected.
The halter proper consists of but two pieces of rope, A and B, the former constituting the nose-piece and the latter the remaining portions.
The main rope commences at a, and is carried downward to form the cheek-piece b, and secured to one end of the nose-piece by the metallic clip 0. It is then carried backward to form the chin-piece d, and secured by a clip, 0, to the other end of the nose-piece.
The chin-piece d is bent or doubled at the middle to form a1oop,f, which is held in shape by means of a metal clip, g.
From the clip 6 the rope is carried upward to form the second cheek-piece, h, and bent into a loop, 1', at the upper end of 'the same. A clip,j, is applied to retain this loop in shape, and the rope carried thence through the loop f to the point of commencement, where it is fastened to the top of the cheek-piece by a clip, k, thus forming the throat-latch Z.
From the clip 7a the free end of the rope is continued a sufficient distance to form the headstall or crown-piece m, the extremity of which will be inserted through the loop 2', as shown.
As a means of securing the end of the headstall m, a metal plate, it, having an upright edge, is applied to the side of the loop i, and secured rigidly in place by means of the clip j, as shown.
The lower end of the platen is provided with a hinged ring, 1), as shown, through which to pass the rope, and which, by bending and holding the rope down sharply and firmly over the edge of the plate, prevents it from escaping or becomin g loosened.
The throat-latch is provided at the middle with a ring, 0, inserted through the middle of the loop around the clip g, by which it is secured in place.
The hitching-strap D has its end inserted through the ring 0, and bent down and fast ened by a clip, 0, as shown.
The various metal clips consist each of a piece of half-round iron folded around the two parts to be united, and compressed and em bedded therein.
It will be noted that the clips are not made in a ring form, but that they are severed on one side. This admits of their being applied in an open or partly-open condition, and being then compressed with any required degree of firmness upon the rope.
By making the clips of heavy metal and with sharp edges, and then compressing them until they are seated well into the rope, and
until they force the contiguous surfaces of the rope firmly together, the latter is held with great security, and prevented from parting or slipping at the joints.
Havingdescribed my invention, what I claim 1s-- 1. ,The halter consisting of the rope B, bent as described, to form the cheek-pieces, throatlatch, chin-piece, and headstall, the rope nosepiece A, made in a separate piece, and the metallic clips, applied in the manner and at the points described and shown.
2. The herein-described method of securing the parts of a rope halter together, cousistin g in applying an open clip of one piece, and then compressing the same both sidewise and endwise around the rope.
3. In a rope halter, the hitching-ring secured in place by the clip which holds the loop in shape.
4. In a rope halter, the headstall fastening consisting of the loop or eye, the metallic plate having the raised edge, and the ring, as shown.
5. In a rope halter, the combination of the nose-piece and metallic fastening-clips with the ropeB, bent to form successively the cheekpiece, chin-piece, second cheek-piece, throatlatch, and headstall, as shown.
SAMUEL SCOTT.
