UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES H. WINTEROVVD, OF LEGRAND, IOWA.
EXTENSIBLE HAME FOR HORSE-COLLARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 774,141, dated November 1, 1904.
Application filed January 22, 1903. Serial No. 140,193. [No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. VVINTEROWD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Legrand, in the county of Marshall and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Extensible Hame for Horse-Collars, of which the'following is a specification.
My object is to provide improved means for lengthening and shortening hames to fit on horses and collars of difierent sizes and to prevent the top ends of the hames from projecting above the collars and horses, so that the breaking of hames incident to extending above a horses neck and the rubbing of horses against fixed objects will be avoided.
My invention consists in means for adjustably connecting two overlying end portions of a hame and covering the connected ends, as hereinafter set forth. pointed outin my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of a pair of hames that may be advantageously used on different-sized horses.
and shows the overlying parts of the upper portion of the hame that are slidably connected. Fig. 3 on the line 3/ 1 of Fig. 1 shows the overlying parts latched together as required to retain them stationary when properly adjusted for use on collars of different sizes. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view on the line .22 of Fig. 1 and shows the overlying lower portions of the hame adj ustably connected and a metal cover fitted and fixed thereto. Fig. 5 is a plan sectional view that shows to what extent the upper and lower portions of the hame may overlap each other.
The numeral 10 designates the upper portion, and 12 the lower portion, of a wooden hame adjustably connected. Parts of their inner side portions are cut away so they can overlap each other and slide longitudinally relative to each other, as required to lengthen and shorten a hame. A longitudinal slot 13 in the upper part 10 allows a bolt 14, having a head 15, to be extended through the slot and fixed in the part 12 by riveting or in any suitable way, so that the bolt can traverse the slot when the part 10 is moved up or down on the part 12. The part 12 is also provided with a slot 13 and a bolt 15, passed through Fig. 2 is a trans- J verse sectional view on the line as a; of Fig. 1
the slot and fixed in the part 10 to slidably connect the part 10 with the part 12.
A metal cover 16 is fixed to the upper part 10 and a corresponding cover 17 to the part 12 in such a manner that they conceal the ends of the overlying parts.
The upper end portion of the part 12 is provided with a series of notches 18 and the lower portion of the part 10 with a single corresponding notch 19 and a spring-latch 20, fixed to the edge of the part 10, so that a stop 21 on the end of the latch will enter the notches in the part 12 when they coincide with the notch in the part 10, and thus lock the two parts together, as required for practical use.
Having thus described the purpose, construction, and operation of my invention, its practical utility will be readily understood by persons familiar with harness-hames, and
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In ahame for horse-collars, atop end portion and a lower end portion fitted together in overlying positions at their inner ends, a longitudinal slot in each of the overlying parts, a bolt fixed in each one of the parts to extend through and traverse the slot in the other part, a series of notches in the edge of the one portion, a single notch in the edge of the other portion and a spring-latch fixed to the edge of the upper slidable portion of the hame arranged and combined inthe manner set forth for the purposes stated.
2. An extensible hame for horse collars comprising a lower portion and an upper portion fitted together to overlie eachv other at their inner ends, each of the overlying parts provided with a longitudinal slot and a bolt fixed in each of the overlying parts to traverse the slot in the other part,a series of notches in the edge of one of the overlying parts and a single notch in the other part, a spring-latch fixed to the edge of the part that has a single notch and a cover fixed to each of the two slidably-connected parts to conceal their inner ends, arranged and combinedto operate in the manner set forth for the purposes stated.
