UNITED] STATES PATENT FFICE.
BERNARD MOGOVERN, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO FRANK ARMSTRONG, OF SAME PLACE.
GARM E N'f-SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 305,622, dated September 23, 1884.
Application filed March 13, 1884. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern: a
Be it known that I, BERNARD MoGovERN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Supports; andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain new and useful-improvements in devices for supporting garments, and has for its object to provide such a device as shall be readily adapted for use, while at the same time its construction shall be exceedingly simple and economical; and with these ends in view my invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter fullyand in detail explained, and then specifically designated by the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains may more fully understand its construction and operation, Iwill proceed to describe the same in detail, referring by letter to the accompanying drawings. forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a front elevation of my improved support; Fig. 2, a back view of the same, and Fig. 3 a perspective view showing the fabric firmly grasped by my device.
Similarletters denote like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
A is the frame, cut away at its center portion, as shown, and provided at the bottom with a V-shaped opening, B.
O is a tongue projecting downwardly from and forming a part of a fork, D.. The ends of this fork are turned over, so as to loosely em- 0 brace the sides of the frame,and. thereby allow said fork to slide freely up and down the frame,
for the purpose presently explained.
The operation of my improvement is as follows: The fabric is brought up through the opening in the frame and merely pushed over the tongue C. The fork is now pulled down until the fabric enters the V-shaped opening B, when all further strain on said fabric only forces the latter more tightly within said open- 0 ing. The extremity of the tongue is turned over,-as shown, in order to afford a graspingsurface on the fabric to prevent slipping; but there is no danger of any tearing, because after the goods have entered the V-shaped opening no further strain comes on the tongue, but they are wedged more firmly within said opening.
I am aware that various devices for supporting garments have been constructed in 6 which the fabric is caught within a V-shaped groove; but I do not wish to be understood as claiming, broadly, this principle; but
What I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The frame A, having V-shaped opening B, in combination with a fork, 1D, arranged to slide freely on said frame, and having formed integral therewith the tongue C, whereby the fabric maybe tightly forced within said open- 7c ing by the actionof the tongue, substantially as shown and described;
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BERNARD MOGOVERN.
