Description
(No Model.) I Y C. F. & W. J.'WALTERS,
I CLASP.
No. 300,924. Patented June 24, 1884.
INVENTOR BY C ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
CHARLES F. WALTERS AND WILLIAM J. WALTERS, OF GANG MILLS, N. Y.
' r; CLASP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 300,924, dated June 24-, 1884.
Application filed February 2, 1884. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, CHARLES F. WAL- TERS and WILLIAM J. WALTERS, of Gang Mills, in the county of Herkimer and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Clasp, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of our invention. is to provide a new and improved clasp for holding stockings, shirt-sleeves, &c.
The invention consists in a clasp formed of a U -shaped frame having bends in the shanks, to the inner free ends of which U shaped frame a V-shaped frame is pivoted, which is adapted to be pressed in between the shanks of the U shaped frame.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side view of our improved clasp, showing the manner in which it holds the stocking. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the clasp. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the parts of the clasp in an openposition.
A U-shaped wire frame, A, is provided in each shank, at or near the middle, with a bend,
a, at which bend the wires are inclined upward and toward each other, whereby the front part, A, of the frame A will be higher than the rear part, A At the outer ends the shanks are provided with downward bends I), so that the lower end cross-piece, B, of the frame A will be in the same plane with the rear part, A of the same. On the inner free ends, 0, of the frame A a V-shaped wire frame, D, is hung in such a manner that it can be swung in between the, raised parts A of the shanks of the frame A, which frame D has its outer end bent upward slightly, as shown at E. An elastic or other band, F, is passed under the upper cross-piece of the frame D, from which band the clasp is suspended. The relative widths of the outer part of the frame D and the part A of the frame A are so arranged pressed in between the shanks of the frame A v at the part A, whereby part of the stocking will be forced in between the shanks of the frame A,and will be clamped between the sides of the frames A and D.
We are aware that a clasp for garments has been heretofore constructed of a wire loop, a piece of webbing provided with a seam embracing the upper cross-bar of said loop, and extending down behind the said loop, where it is provided with an ordinary button on its front side, for the lower end of the loop to engage, and we do not desire to claim any such construction.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a clasp, the combination of the U- shaped frame, formed with upward-project ing arms on its sides, with the V-shaped frame pivoted to-the upper ends of the U-shaped frame, and constructed to pass between the projections on the U-shaped frame, substantially as and for the purpose'set forth.
2. A clasp formed of a U-shaped frame, A, having bends a and b at the middle and outer ends of the shanks, respectively, and of a V- shaped frame hinged to the inner free ends of the U-shaped frame, which V-shaped frame D is adapted to be pressed between the raised outer parts, A, of the shanks of the frame A, which raised'parts are formed between the bends a and 12, substantially as herein shown and described.
