UNITED 'rns IMPROVEMENT IN OVERALLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. I 79,172, dated J nne 27, 1876; application filed April 17, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE R. EAGER, of Newton, in the county of Middlesex and State of l\'Iassachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Overalls and other garments; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specificatiom-in which--,
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a pair of overalls having my improvement applied thereto, the legs being torn off. Fig. 2 represents a transverse section through the waistband, showing the method of fastening the cord to the waistband, and of adjusting and fastening its free end. Fig. 3 represents a view in perspective of the hook which fastens the cord, and Fig. 4represents a modified form of the hook.
My invention, relates to anew and improved method of adjusting the waistband of garments to persons having different sized waists-that is to say, such garments as blouses, overshirts, overalls, pants, drawers, &c.
My improvement consists, in combining with the hollow waistband of a garment provided with a cord or round strap, a hook provided with a clutch-notch, by means of which the adjusting cord or strap is held firmly in place, when once adjusted, by simply forming a knot on the cord close to the hook, then passing the knot over the end of the hook and afterward forcing the cord in the rear of the knot into the clutch-notch of the hook.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my improvement, I will now describe it in detail.
Referring to the drawings it will be seen that the waistband A is made hollow. In this case the hollow is represented as being confined to the rear portion of the garment, but it may be extended all around, if desired, or
it may be extended for a distance even less than one-half of the length of the waistband, but for all practical purposes one-half, and that the rear half, is found to answer an admirable purpose. Into this hollow is arranged a cord, a, the inner end of which is secured to the Waistband, as shown at b, and for which purpose it may either be riveted or sewed. The other end of the cord is passed out of the hollow of the waistband through a suitable opening, 0, on the opposite side of the garment from that to which its other end is fastened. Immediately adjoining the opening 0 is secured a metal clutch-hook, d, such as those shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
The hook, Fig. 3, is preferred, as its two ends are bent or curved around to clasp the cord, and are made elastic so as to yield and allow the cord to be readily forced down between them, and then springingback prevent the cord from working out. To facilitate this operation the upper ends of the clasp-hook are curved or bent backward, as shown in the drawing,- which greatly aids the introduction of the cord.
The modification shown in Fig.,4 differs from that, in that the ends of the slotted hook are rigid and unyielding.
The fibers .of the cord are compressed in forcing it into the slot, and afterward expand on reaching the enlarged opening 0. This answers an excellent purpose, but is not deemed so good a plan as the other.
Havingdescribed myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An overall or other garment provided with a hollow waistband, and with a cord or strap, and clutch-hook, d, constructed substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE E. EAGER.
