Be it known that I, WILBUR F. OSBORNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Derby, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying draw ings and the numerals of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in

This invention relates to an improvement in buckles, and particularly buckles adapted for suspenders and of the type now known as rustless bucklesthat is, buckles which when webbed do not expose any of the metal surface at the back. In buckles of this character it is desirable that the lower side should have considerable width to prevent the frame from turning; and the object of this invention is to so form the frame from wire as to produce a wide bar and the invention consists in the construction, as hereinafter de scribed and particularly recited in the claim.
In carrying out my invention the frame is formed from wire, the ends 2 and 3 forming what will be called the upper side, While the lower side is formed by doubling the side portions 4 upon themselves and against the central portion 5 and parallel therewith, the portions & and 5 forming three rows of metal, or, in other words, forming the lower side three times as wide as the diameter of the wire from which the loop is formed. Pivoted to the upper side is a lever 6, having a jaw 7, which extends toward the lower side. This buckle is webbed like buckles of the same class namely, one end 8 is folded over the lower side, another portion passing upward from front to rear through the loop formed by the upper and lower sides, this portion of webbing being engaged by the jaw 7 when the lever 6 is turned to its closed position, crowding a portion of the web passing through the loop against the portion of the web folded over the lower side of the frame, so that the portion of the web passing upward over the loop stands in substantially the same plane as the portion of the web which is secured to the lower side. By thus constructing the frame a wide lower side is secured and one which permits of the web being sewed to it without danger of the needle hitting any obstruction on the lower side. This form of frame is also exceedingly cheap to manufacture and can therefore be produced at low cost.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a suspender-buekle, the combination with a frame having an upper and a lower side forming a loop between them, said lower side formed by bending portions of the wires inward into the plane of and in contact with the central portion of the wire and parallel therewith, whereby a wide lower side is produced, of a lever pivoted to the upper side of the frame in position to have its clamping edge coact with the upper edge or top of the lower side of the frame, and a piece of webbing having one end attached to the lower side of the frame and a portion passed from front to rear through the said loop and engaged by the clamping edge of the lever which deflects it over or approximately over the upper edge or top of the lower side of the frame.
