PATENT FFl ClE.
DWIGHT L. SMITH AND JOHN J. BUCHANAN, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNORS TO WATERBURY BUCKLE 00., OF VVATERBURY, CONNECTI- OUT, A CORPORATION.
GARMENT SUPPORTER CLASP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 741,417, dated October 13, 1903.
Application filed July 13, 1903. Serial No. 165,215- (No model To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DWIGHT L. SMITH and JOHN J. BUCHANAN, of \rVaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connectiout, have invented a new and useful Garment-Supporter Clasp; and we do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the figures of reference marked thereon, to to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-- Figure 1, a front View of a portion of an arm-band or gartershowing our clasp applied thereto; Fig. 2, a rear view of the same;
Fig. 3, a sectional view thereof; Fig. 4, a
plan view of the clasp removed; Fig. 5, a reverse plan view of the same; Fig. 6, a sectional view of the same; Fig. 7, a modification in the form of a wire loop.
This invention relates to an improvement in garment-supporter clasps, and while particularly adapted for arm-bands is equally applicable for other purposes, the object of the invention being a simple construction and arrangement of parts which enables a web to be readily secured to a clasp and permits the clasp to be adjusted on another portion of the web; and the invention consists go in the construction, as hereinafter described,
and particularly recited in the claim.
As herein shown, the clasp is formed. from a plate 2, the lower edge of which is formed with inwardly-projecting gripping-teeth 3 and the upper edge with inwardly-projecting teeth or serrations 4. From the center of the plate a lip 5 is cut and turned downwardly, so that its lower edge will extend into line with the teeth 3. The sides of the plate are formed with ears 6, which are bent around the sides of a wire loop 7', which extends upward and over the upper serrated edge 4 of the plate, forminga narrow passage between the two parts. Preferably the ends 8 of the loop extend inward below the ears 6, or they may extend downward and be turned in ward between the lip 5 and the lower portion of the plate, as shown in Fig. '7. One end 9 of the web is inserted between the lower portion of the plate and the lip 5 and the lip pressed downward, so as to force the Web into engagement with the teeth 3, thus uniting one end of the web to the plate. The web then passes downward and through a loop 10 of any preferred construction and another portion 11 passing upward between the loop 7 and the edge 4., and by turning the plate or the web the web may be drawn through the clasp without hindrance and so as to permit adjustment; but when the clasp is turned against the portion 11 the web will be gripped between the edge 4. and the top bar 7, so as to prevent further movement.
Preferably, and as herein shown, the sides of the plate below the ears 6 are turned inward, forming side flanges 12, between which the end of the web is located.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A garment supporter clasp comprising a plate provided at opposite edges with teeth,
a lip out from the body of said plate and turned downward, a loop secured to said frame and passing over the upper edge thereof, one portion of a web secured to said plate between the lip and the lower edge of the plate, another portion of the Web adapted to pass between the loop and the upper edge of the frame and be gripped between them, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof We have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DWIGHT L. SMITH. JOHN J. BUCHANAN.
