To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HERMANHKERNGOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to buckles; and its object is to provide a buckle that will be economical in manufacture, simple in construction, and that will prevent lateral slipping or doubling of the attached strap or strip.

To this end my invention consists of the device hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

My invention is illustrated in the accompan ying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the buckle; Fig. 2, a cross-section; Fig. 3, a perspective View of a blank from which the buckle is formed, showing the socket main frame upturned.

Referring to the drawings, the body of the buckle consists of the rear permanently-attached base portion a, the front bearingarm 6, and the side arms 0, connecting the front bearing-arm and the base portion. The front and inside arms are formed by striking up from a blank of metal, as shown in Fig. 3, within the blank and away from the edge a leaf of metal d, which is of sufficient width to form a buckle-slot e of the proper size and to also form when turned back down upon the base portion an inclosing hood, which forms, with the base, a socket to receive a clasp member. This clasp member consists of a looped frame f, having one arm 9 thereof loosely mounted in said socket and having a certain extent of back-and-forth movement therein. Beyond the socket the base portion a is prolonged into the attaching-flange h. This flange is provided at each end with an attaching-hole 2,01 several holes may be pro vided, through which stitching is adapted to be passed to secure the attached strip or strap firmly to the ends of the buckle, and thus prevent the buckle from slipping around on the loop of the attached strap or strip, so as to carry the loop in the corners or onto the side arms of the buckle, and also preventing the strap or strip from being doubled and wrinkled on the buckle-frame.

In use the end of the strap or other goods to be permanently attached to the buckle is passed over the attaching-flange and socket, through the slot, and back upon itself and then the two parts sewed together by stitches passed through the holes 2'. Another strap or the opposite end of the same strap is engaged with the front part of the buckle by passing the end of the strap up through the frame-slot and through the clamp member and then passed down between the clamp member and the front bearing-arm b, whereby the pull on the strap holds the end thereof securely clamped between the clamp member and the front bearing-arm.

In the ordinary buckle of this character the slot is formed by cutting out bodily and removing from the body of the blank a section of the blank, which is thrown away, and thus entails a considerable loss of metal, while the socket-hood is formed by bending over toward the slot the base portion from the extreme rear edge, thus making it impossible to form an attaching-flange on the base portion. In my invention by striking up the leaf of metal at within the body of the blank and turning it back and down upon the base portion to leave the buckle-slot and form the socket-hood not only is the slot formed without waste of material, but it is rendered possible to provide the attachingflange extending from the base portion.
