W. J. WALTERS.
BUCKLE.
No. 374,022. Patented Nov. 29, 1887.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM WALTERS, OF PROSPECT, NEW YORK.
BUCKLE.
QPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 374,022. dated November 29, 1887.
Application filed June 17, 1887. Serial No. 241,626. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
I Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. WALTERS, of Prospect, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Suspender-Buckle, of which the follow-- mg is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved suspender-buckle which is simple in construction and holds the web of the suspender firmly in place when increasing the pull on the suspender-strap.
The invention consists of a buckle-frame provided with a crossbar and of a clamp sliding on the side bars of the said frame and pressing the web of the suspender upon the fixed cross bar, said clamp being connected with the suspender-straps.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in boththe figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improvement, and Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same.
In the middle of the frame B extends thecross-bar O, fastenedby its ends to the side bars, B. On the latter is held to slide vertically the clamp'D, made of one piece ofwire, and having its ends formed each into a loop, through'which loops pass the side bars, B. The ends D of the clamp D continue into the angular bars D, held in front of the crossbar O and passing downward-toward each other and under the crossbar B of the frame B, and then they are formed into a loop or hook, E, on which is held the ring F, carrying the susponder-straps G, of any approved construction. The web H of the suspender is passed at one end to the rear of the top cross-bar, B and then over the front of the crossbar O in the rear of the clamp D, and then the end is passed downward at the rear of said clamp and the crossbar B ofthe frame B. The middle of the bar B is bent to serve as a guard for the lower part of the clamp D.
The clamp D slides up and down on the side bars, B, of the frame B, and when the suspender is applied the clampl) is moved downward, so that the side bars, D of the clamp D press the web H of the suspender tightly upon the cross-bar 0, thus connecting the .buckle A securely to the suspender-web H.
It will be seen that when a strong downward pull is exerted against the suspender-straps G and a strong upward pull against the suspenderwveb H, the clamp D will be drawn very tight withits side bars, D, upon the web H, thus pressing the latter very firmly against the cross-bar O, and thus holding the buckle firmly in place on the suspenderstrap H.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I 1. A buckle consisting of a frame provided with a cross-bar and a clamp sliding on the side bars of the frame and projecting down in front of the cross-bar and in rear of the lower end bar of the said frame, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with a buckle-frame, of a cross-bar secured to the side bars of said frame and a clamp adapted to slide on said side bars of the frame and extending in front of said cross-bar and in the rear of the lower end bar of the frame, said clamp being provided with a hook on its lower end, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination, with the suspenderbuckle A, provided with the side bars, B, and the end bars, -B B of the cross-bar 0, secured to said side bars, B, the clamp D, having the ends D, adapted to slide on said side bars, E, said clamp being also provided with the bars D passing over the cross-bar O and adapted to press the web of the suspender against said cross-bar, and a hook or loop formed at the lower end of said clamp to receive the suspender-straps, substantially as shown and described.
NV ILLIAM J. WALTERS.
