wumsm JOHN SPEAKS, OF STELLA, MISSOURI.
SAFETY-STIRRUP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 22, 1908.
Application filed July 15, 1908. Serial No. 443,708.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN SPEAKs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Stella, in the county of Newton and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety-Stirrups, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to safety stirrups, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a stirrup of simple construction which will permit the foot of the rider to become detached from the stirrup and the stirrup detached from the suspending strap in case a horse should bolt or become unruly.
Another object of the invention is to provide a safety stirrup having a detachable cross bar connected to the stirrup strap and means for holding said cross bar in connection with the stirrup and to permit the cross bar to become detached from the stirrup when the stirrup assumes a position out of the normal.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a safety stirrup made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical section.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the foot bar of the stirrup, and 2 are the side bars thereof. As shown, the stirrup is made of sheet metal or similar material, but it will be understood that any form of stirrup can be utilized. Formed in the side bars 2 of the stirrup is an inclined slot 3, and the cross bar 4 to which the stirrup strap 5 is connected is provided with flattened ends 6 which slide into the slot 3. Shoulders 7 are formed on the cross bar, and the central portion of the cross bar is rounded, as at 8, for the loop on the stirrup strap'5. At a slight distance from the cross bar 4 a bar 9 extends across from one of the side bars 2 to the other and is rigidly secured to said side bars. A spring 10 isconnected to the bar 9 by means of a rivet 11, said spring extending upward and outward and bearing against the stirrup strap 5 to hold the cross bar 4 in the inclined slot with suflicient force to prevent its withdrawal, except in case of an accident in which the stirrup will be canted out of a vertical position into an inclined position to permit the cross bar 4 to become detached from the slots 3 against the tension of the spring 10.
My invention is of simple construction, can be applied to stirrups of any kind, will operate efficiently for its purpose and can be manufactured at slight cost.
I claim 1. A safety stirrup provided with side bars having inclined slots therein, a cross bar fitted at its ends into said slots, a stirrup strap connected to said cross bar, and a bar carrying a spring bearing against said stirrup strap to hold said cross bar in place and to permit the same to become detached from the stirrup when the latter is in a position which it will assume when the rider is thrown.
2. A stirrup, the side bars of which are provided with inclined slots, a cross bar to which the stirrup strap is connected, said cross bar having reduced ends to fit and slide in the slots of the side bars, shoulders on said cross bar inside the side bars, and a spring carried by the stirrup and bearing against the stirrup strap to hold the cross bar in operative position.
3. A stirrup provided with side bars having inclined slots therein, a cross bar to which the stirrup strap is connected, said cross bar having reduced ends to fit and slide in the slots of the side bars, and a spring connected to the stirrup and bearing against the stirrup strap to hold the cross bar in operative position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnessess.
JOHN SPEAKS.
