BUCKLE.
No. 338,240. Patented Mar. 16, 1886.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MELANOTHON E. ZELLER, OF BLUFFTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO A. J. ST. JOHN, OF SAME PLACE.
BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 338,240, dated March 16, 1886.
Application filed November 2, 1885. Serial No. 181,589. (No model.)
To LEZZZUILOTH it may concern.-
Be it known that I, 1VIELANOTHON E. ZEL- LER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bluffton, in the county of Allen and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to buckles, and has for its object the provision of an article of the class named which, although particularly designed for use upon the crown-piece of headstalls to hold the winker strap or stay in position, may be used to advantage on other parts 1 of the harness.
The invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, substantially as-hereinafter described, and spccifically pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents an elevation of my improved buckle applied to the crown-piece of a headstall. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation on the linexxof Fig. 1. Fig. 3is a similar sectional View on line y y of Fig.1.
Referring to the drawings, iii-which similar letters of reference denote similar parts, A designates the crown piece; B, the winker strap or stay of a headstall; and (J designates 0 the buckle, consisting, essentially, of side bars, 0, cross-bars c 0 c and lugs or ears 0, all formed or struck up from a single piece of metal or made in a single casting. The crossbars extend from one to the other of the side 5 bars in different planes, the forward bar, 0, occupying a plane intermediate of the bars 0 c. The forward bar, 0, when in use, is adapted to bear or rest upon the outer surface of the strap or stay B, and to receive upon its 0 outer surface, at the middle thereof, the point of a tongue, 0 hinged at its rear end to the middle cross-bar, 0", below the strap, and projecting thence through apertures b in said strap to the bar 0. The rear cross-bar, 0 connects 5 the upwardly-projecting portions of the side bars at a suitable distance from the crown piece to which the buckle is secured to permit free play of the end of the strap B when the latter is in position. The lugs 0 project laterally from the rear ends of the side bars, at the lower edges thereof, their lower surfaces conforming to the required curvature of the crown-piece A, as shown in Fig. 2, each of the lugs 0* having a perforation to receive a rivet,
0, by which the buckle is secured to the crown- 7 piece B.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that a buckle made in accordance therewith will possess peculiar advantages not found in buckles having the usual well-known 6) construction.
Modifications in details of construction of my invention may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereofas, for instance, the outer ends of the lugs 0 may be bent downward to form rivets in lieu of those shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. A buckle having side bars provided with laterally-projecting attaching-ears, in combination with crossbars and a tongue pivotedto one of said bars, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the crown-piece and winker strap or stay with a buckle having side bars provided with lateral securing lugs or ears, transverse bars, and a pivoted tongue, substantially as described.
3. A buckle having side bars provided with apertured lateral securing-lugs, and transverse bars extending from one to the other of said bars in different planes, and a tongue hinged to the lower of such bars, substantially as .described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MELANGTHON E. ZELLER.
