Y B. MYERS.
SAFETY STIRRUP.
APPLICATION FILED 001214, 1911.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN MYERS, OF SPOKANE, WASHINGTON.
SAFETY-STIRRUP.
To 04% whom it may 00ncern.
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN MYERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the cOunty of Spokane and State of lVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety- Stirrups; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to safety stirrups, and the object is to provide improved means for hinging one side of the stirrup and the hood thereof, so that these members may be swung outwardly in the event that the rider is thrown from the saddle, thereby preventing the riders foot being caught and held in the stirrup.
The invention consists in the novel construction hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a view of the device in front elevation. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is an elevation showing the movable member opened. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views, Fig. 5 being a section on the line 55 of Fig. 3.
In carrying out my invention, I make use of the stirrup including a member 10 having an upper central portion or head 11 provided with a slot 12 for receiving the supporting strap. The lower bar or foot portion 13 of the stirrup projects at nearly a right angle to member 10, and has connected with one end thereof, by means of a pivOt' 14:, a member 15 corresponding in general construction to member 10, but having a securing portion at its free end, for engagement with the upper central portion or head 11.
A hood is secured in any suitable manner to the member 10, and consists of two sections 20 and 21, the first of which remains permanently in its normal position, while member 21 is hinged so that it may swing outwardly when the pivoted side of the stirrup is moved from its normal position.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 654,732.
The hinge connection is indicated at 22, and springs 23 and 24 are provided for returning the hinged portion of the hood to its proper position after having been displaced therefrom.
It will thus be observed that a construction has been described comprising a stirrup provided with a hinged side member designed to swing in a given direction and a hinged hood member designed to swing in a direction at substantially a right angle to the direction of movement of theside member of the stirrup.
What I claim is:
1. In a stirrup, a head, a foot portion, a plurality of members connected with the head, one of said members being pivoted at its lower end to the foot portion and having detachable connection with the head at the other end, and a hood comprising a plurality of sections one of which is connected with one of the said members and the other of which is hinged to the section first mentioned.
2. In a stirrup, a head, a foot portion, a plurality of members depending from the head, one of said members being pivoted at its lower end to the foot portion and havin detachable connection with the head at the other end, a spring for holding the pivoted member in its normal position, a hood comprising a plurality of sections one of which is permanently connected with one of the said members and the second of which has hinged connection with the section first mentioned.
3. In. a stirrup, a head provided with guides, a plurality of depending members projecting from the head, one of said members carrying lugs engaging the guides, a foot portion connecting the ends of the projecting members, a hood comprising a plurality of sections having hinged connection with each other, said hood being secured to the stirrup.
4:. In a stirrup, a head, a plurality of members projecting therefrom, one of said members being constructed to swing outwardly from said head, and a hood, one portion of which has hinged connection with the remaining portion.
5.' A stirrup comprising a plurality of members pivotally connected, and a hood mounted on the stirrup and comprising a plurality of members having hinged connection with each other.
6. A stirrup comprising a plurality of In testimony whereof I afiix my signature members pivotally connected, a hood conin presence of two witnesses. nectecl with the stirrup and comprising a plurality of members one of which is ar- BENJAMIN MYERS I ranged to swing with reference to the other, Witnesses: and a spring for holding the swinging mem- H.
