SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 259,793, dated June 20, 1882.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, GEORGE EDGAR BAU- DER and CHARLES CHRIST Y BAUDER, of Bonaparte, in the county of Van Buren and State ot' Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Self-Adjusting Saddle-Trees for Harness, of which the following is a full,clear, and exact description.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a plan view of our improvement, the water-hook and its base-plate being removed and one-side part being detached. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same, partly 'in section. the same.

This invention. relates to that class of harness saddle-trees that are adjustable to different-sized horses, and has for its object to make the saddle-trees adjustable and guard against the saddle-trees pinching or otherwise injuring the backs of the horses.

A represents the side parts or pieces ot' the tree, to which the housings and pads are secured in the ordinary manner, and to which the terrets B are secured.

Upon the inner ends of the side pieces, A, are formed tenons C, the ends of which are rounded ott, and which' [it into mortises D in the ends of the center piece, E. Upon the lower side of each of the tenons C is formed a shoulder, F, to strike against the center piece, E, at the lower side of the Inortise D, to prevent the outer ends of the side pieces, A, from dropping downward and inward too far.

G is the water-hook, the screw H of whichV passes through the center piece, E, and has a nut, I, screwed upon its lower end. The side pieces, A, being `jointed to the center piece, E, and the nut I requiring to be screwed on the bolt after said bolt is passed through the said center piece, each side piece has its separate pad arranged preferably in its coneavity. Otherwise the lining or padding will require to be cut in order to unscrew the nut I and remove the water-hook.

Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation of Upon the shank of thewater-hook G isforined a base-plate, J, which overlaps the mortises D and the tenons C, and serves as a cap-plate to cover and protect the said Inortises and tenons. Upon the lower side of the end parts of the plate J are formed cross-ribs K, which enter the upper ends of the grooves L, formed in the center piece, E, at the opposite sides of the mortises D. The middle parts oi' the ribs K enter grooves M in the upper sides of the tenons C. The grooves M are made wider than the thickness of the ribs K, so that the side pieces, A,\vill have sufticient play to allowthem to adjust themselves to the backs of horses of different sizes. The side pieces, A, are hinged to thecenter piece,E,by pins M passingthrough or formed upon the tenons G, and the ends of which enter and work in the grooves L of the centerl piece, E.

With this construction the parts of the sad! dle-'tree will be securely connected to each other in such a manner that they cannot pinch or otherwise injure the back of a horse in adjusting themselves to the said horse, as the center piece, E, prevents the inner ends of the side pieces from moving inward. Upon thenpper side of the inner edge ot each of the side pieces, A, at the base Ot' the tenon C, is formed a shoulder, O, which strkies against the end of the cap-plate J, and thus limits the outward movements of the said side pieces, A.

Having thus desibed our invention, we claim as new anddesire to secure by Letters Patent-` In a saddle-tree, the combination, with the center piece, E, having slots D and grooves L,

and the side pieces, A, having tenons C,cross pins N, and grooves M, of the cap-plate J, having ribs K, substantiall;v as herein shown and described,whereby the hinging connections of the center piece and side pieces are covered and protected, as Set forth.
