ROLLER-TERRET.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 369,999, dated September 13, 1887.

Application filed March 23, 1887.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, MONROE WERKHEIsER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Phillipsburg, in the county ofVVarren and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Roller-Terrets; and I do hereby declare that the. following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to 11 which it appertains to make and use the same,

reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my im- 15 proved terret, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

My invention has relation to terrets for harness,- and it consists in. the improved construction and combination of parts of a terret provided with anti-friction rollers, upon which the reins may travel without perceptible fric' tion, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the shank or stem of the terret, which is of the usual construction, adapted to be screwed into the saddle or pad of the harness in the usual manner, and a rectangular frame, 2, is formed at the upper end of this stem or shank. The corners of this frame are bent rectangularly inward, as shown at 3, and the ends of rods 4 are secured in the sides of 3 5 these inwardly-bent corners, having sleeves or rollers 5 journaled upon them. In this man-' ner a rectangular frame of rollers will be formed within the terret-frame; and it will be seen that the reins passing through terrets having 40 the rollers may slide freely through them without any considerable friction, preventing the reins from being worn out, and likewise preventing the reins from wearing out the eye or frame of the terret.

The rectangular form with two horizontal 5 sides and two vertical sides is the most prefe erable form, as the reins will usually either be held in a vertical plane when drawn tight, causing them to bear against the sides of the terrets, or in a horizontal plane when held loosely, when they will rest upon the lower sides of the terrets; but, if desired, the terrets may have their frames shaped in any desired form and provided with any number and form of rollers, according to the taste and desires of the person using the terrets and according to the position of the driver to the team; and it will also be understood that the rollers may be formed solid and have trun- 6o naled directly upon the sides of the frame without departing from the spirit of my invention, such modifications being possible without changing the principle of the invention.

Having thus described niyinvention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. In a harness-terret, the combination of the rectangular eye of the terret, having its corners bent inward, with rollers journaled between the sides of the said inwardly-bent corners parallel to the sides of the eye, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.

2. In a harness-terret, the combination of the rectangular eye or frame of the terret, hav- 7 5 ing its corners bent inward, rods secured with their ends to the sides of the inwardly-bent corners parallel to the sides, and rollers or sleeves journaled upon the rods, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
