BARBED-WIRE UN ROLLER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, Louis Sci-110K, a citizen of the United States, residing at Thomson, in the county of Carroll and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Barbed-Vile Unrollers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to tools or implements for handling and unrolling barbed wire, and it has for its object to produce a device of simple and improved construction whereby a reel of barbed wire may be conveniently handled and unrolled by one man or boy.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described with supporting wheels to facilitate the op eration thereof.

A further objectof the invention is to produce a device of the character described having tension means whereby the unrolling of the barbed wire from the reel may be controlled and checked when desired.

With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the recise structural details therein exhibited, lint that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claim may be resorted to when desired.

The improved implement is in the nature of a pair of tongs, the members of which B, B are pivotally connected by a bolt or pivot member 15, each of said members comprising an elongated shank 16 having at one end a handle 17 and at the other end a head comprising an inclined or offset shoulder portion 18, a longitudinal bar 19 and a pintle 2O projecting inwardly from the terminal of the longitudinal bar. Bolted or otherwise detachablv secured on each longitudinal bar 19 is a downwardly extending bracket member 21 having an outwardly extending spindle 22 on which a ground wheel 28 is journaled.

The shank portions 16 of the members B are curved or arched outwardly with respect to one another, causing their intermediate portions to be spaced apart for the reception of an oblong link 24. By moving this link in the direction of the pivot member 15 the shank portions may be spread apart by proper manipulations of the handles17, thus enabling the pintles 20 to be engaged with the openings at the ends of the tubular core 30 of a barbed wire reel. By compressing the shank portions 16 or moving them together, the reel will be grasped between the longitudinal bars 19 and may be retained by sliding the link 24 outward from the pivot member 15. The arched shank portions 16 are possessed of such resiliency that by properly manipulating the link, the tongs formed by the members B, B may be tensioned on the ends of the reel core, thereby retaining the latter securely in position. The pintles 20 are preferably provided with washers 25 constituting friction members which by pressing against the ends of the reel core will resist rotation of the latter to any desired extent.

It will be evident that by properly manipulating the shank members 16, the head portions thereof may be'spread apart to grasp a wire reel, after which they may be collapsed or moved together so as to hold such reel with any desired degree of tension. By rolling the implement over the ground one end of the wire having been previously attached to some fixed point or otherwise held, the wire will be unrolled from the reel. Any tendency of the wire to unroll too rapidly may be checked by compressing the shank members so as to increase the tension of the friction disks or washers upon the ends of the reel core. It will be found a simple matter to properly adjust the link 24 so as to maintain a proper degree of tension.

It is at times desirable to dispense with the ground wheels, and when this is the case the brackets 21 being detachably connected with the longitudinal bars 19 may he readily disconnected. The reel may then be grasped in the same manner as previously described, but in unrolling the wire the reel will be dragged directly over the ground.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, it will be seen that I have produced an extremely simple and effective device whereby barbed wire may be handled and unrolled by one man or boy without danger of injury by the barbs of the wire to the person or his garments. When it is considered that barbed wire has heretofore usually been unrolled by extending a stick through the tubular core, the projecting ends of such stick being carried by two men, the advantages of this simple device will be readily apparent.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is

An implement of the class described consisting of a pair of tongs comprising two pivotally connected members each having a shank portion, a handle at one end thereof, an offset forming a shoulder at the other end thereof, and a longitudinal bar extending from said offset and having a terminal pintle, brackets connected with and extending downwardly with respect to the longitudinal bars, spindles on said brackets, and wheels journaled on said spindles whereby the members of the tongs are movable about the axis of their COIlIlGOlllIlg pivot and also about the axes of the wheel carrying spindles to pick up and otherwise manipulate a wire reel.
