PAPER-PICKER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LoUIs H. ORsoN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Willoughby, in the county of Lake and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper- Pickers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descriptlon of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The invention relates to improvements in picking devices.

The object of the present invention 1s to improve the construction of picking devices and to provide a simple, inexpensive and efiicient paper picker of strong and durable construction designed for use in parks, places of amusement and the like for picking up paper, orange peels, banana peels, candy boxes and the like and equipped with a spike or pointed rod on which such articles are collected and having means for expelling and discharging such articles whereby the same may be conveniently deposited in a suitable receptacle.

A further object of the invention is to provide a paper picker of this character capable of being easily and quickly operated so that a person may remove rubbish from a relatively large area in a comparatively small space of time and without bending or stooping.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

slidably mounted in a sleeve or tubular member 2 and movable inwardly and outwardly with respect to the same for arranging the pointed rod or spike in an extending projecting position for collecting paper, banana peels, orange peels and the like by spearing the same and for withdrawing the spike or rod from the collected material to deposit the latter in a suitable receptacle. The tubular member 2 which is preferably in the form of a casting is provided at its outer end with projecting arms or wings 3 which the inward movement of the speared material on the rod or spike which isconnected to one end of a coiled spring 4: for moving the spike in one direction with relation to the tubular member 2. The tubular member is secured at its inner end to a relatively fixed handle 5 consisting of a wooden rod provided in its lower end with a socket or bore 6 into which the slidable rod or spike 1 moves when the same is drawn inwardly by a sliding sleeve or handle 7. The sliding sleeve or handle 7 which is arranged on the relatively fixed handle 5 is equipped with a transverse bolt 8 extending through longitudinal slots 9 formed in the relatively fixed handle and in the sleeve and adapted to permit the slidable handle to move longitudinally of the device to permit the coiled spring to actuate the slidable rod or spike 1. The slidable sleeve is equipped with a catch consisting of a leVer 1O fulcrumed at an intermediate point at 11 to provide inner and outer arms, the outer arm having an inwardly projecting engaging portion 12 adapted to extend into a recess 13 for looking the spike in an extended position and also for relieving the spring of strain incident to spearing a heavy piece of paper or the like. The spring is secured at its inner end 14 to the tubular memberand its outer end 15 which is connected with the rod or slidable member 1 operates in a slot 16 in the tubular member 2,

When the rod or member 1 is arranged in a projecting position it is adapted for spearing the material to be collected and the catch is maintained in engagement with the notch 13 by a spring 17 and is operated to release the slidable sleeve or handle when it is desired to remove the accumulated trash from the projecting portion of the slidable rod or member 1. \Vhat is claimed is 1. A. paper picker including a tubular member, a relatively fixed handle, connected With the tubular member, a rod having a pointed end slidably mounted in said tubular member, a sliding'operating sleeve carried by the tubular member, means rigidly connecting said sleeve and rod, said means being adapted to limit the sliding movement of said'rod.

A paper picker including a tubular member, a relatively fiXed handle connected with the tubular member, said tubular memher having a slidable rod therein, a slidable sleeve carried by the tubular member and means for connecting the slidable sleeve and slidable rod, and means carried by the slidable sleeve and cooperating with the tubu lar member for locking the sliding rod in an extended position.

3. A paper picker including a tubular member, a relatively fixed handle connected with the tubular member, a rod having a pointed lower end slidably mounted in said tubular member, an operating handle slidably carried by said tubular member, and

means rigidly connecting the sliding operating handle and the upper end of the rod, said means limiting the sliding movement of the rod and preventing any relatively rotary movement of the rod and tubular member. V r

A. paper picker including a tubular member, a relatively fixed handle connected with the tubular member, a rod slidably mounted in said tubular member, an operating sleeve slidably carried by said tubular member, means connecting said operating sleeve and rod, a spring having one end secured to said tubular member and the 0pposite end to said sliding rod to normally hold said rod in said tubular member, and a pivoted catch carried by said operating member for locking the sliding rod in an eX tended position.
