NITED TATES MUN ROE VAUGHN SHOFFNER, OF NEAR QUITMAN, ARKANSAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO RUFUS A. JACKSON AND ADAM GUTHRIE, JR.
DEVICE FOR REMOVING'BUCKETS, 86C. FROM WELLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 621,379, dated March 21, 1899.
Application filed May 13, 1898. Serial No. 680,583. (No model.)
To all whom it mag/concern.-
Be it known that LMUNROE VAUGHN SHoFF NER, a citizen of the United States, residing nearQuitman, in the county of Oleburne and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new useful Improvements in Devices for Removing Buckets, Cups, Sticks, and other Like Things from WVells; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is a device for removing buckets, cups, and other like things from wells; and it consists of two spring-bars joined at their upper ends and having claws at their lower ends. The springs are so set that the two claws come together.
The device is set by a brace and thrown by a trigger and rod.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my device. Fig. 2 is an edge view. Figs. 3 and 4 are perspective views of different styles of claws.
My invention is described as follows:
First it is lowered into the well by means of a rope 1, the lower end of which is secured in the eye 2 in the upper ends of the bars. The bars 3 and 4 are welded or otherwise secured together at their upper ends and are so set that claws 5 and 6 come together of their own accord. Pivoted to the rod 3 about midway its length is a notched brace 7, having two or more notches 8. These notches catch in a corresponding slot 9 in arm 4. Just below slot 9 is pivoted one end of a trigger 10, to the other end of which is secured a small rod or wire 11. This rod or Wire extends to the top of the well, as does the rope.
This device will take almost anything out of a well from a large piece of timber to any thing no larger than a pocket-knife.
To the bottom ends of these arms maybe secured claws of any shape and with any number of teeth, and consequently the device may be used for taking from the well gravel, trash, mud, (to.
To operate the device, spring the bars apart, and set them by the brace 8. Let the device down into the well and straddle the thing to be removed. Then pull on the rod 11. This operates the trigger and throws the device, when the claws come together.
Having described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*
The combination of the rope 1; spring-bars 3 and 4c, secured together at their upper ends and having the eyes 2; claws 5 and 6, secured to the lower end of the said bars; brace 7, pivoted to the bar 3, and having notches 8, adapted to catch against the lower wall of the slot 9 trigger 10, pivoted to the bar 4,, immediately under brace 7, and adapted to throw the brace 7, out of contact with the lower wall of slot 9; rod 11, its lower end secured to the free end of the trigger 10, its upper end reaching to the top of the well, and adapted to operate the trigger substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MUN ROE VAUGHN SHOFFNER.
