UNITED STATES PATENT ,EEIcE.
JAMES C. HALL, OF WALDO, FLORIDA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-FOURTH TO GEORGE I-I. BARKER, OF SAME PLACE.
UMBRELLA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 594,135, dated November 23, 1897.
Application filed January 11, 1 89 '7.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES C. HALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waldo, in the county of Alachua and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrellas; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has reference to a novel construction in an umbrella or parasol and it consists in the features of construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of the umbrella-handle and portion of the frame constructed in accordance with this invention and showing the parts in the position they assume when the frame is closed, and Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the parts in the position they assume when the frame is open.
Referring now to said drawings, 1 indicates the stem of the umbrella, to which the ribs are pivoted.
2 indicates an operating-stern, to which the spreading-levers are pivoted. The said operating-stem is hollow and receives the stem 1 in the manner shown. The said operatingstem 2 is also provided with a longitudinal slot 3, and the sleeve 4, sliding upon the operating-stem 2, is connected through this slot 3 with the stem 1. The said sleeve 4 is provided with a spring-actuated detent 5 to engage openings 6 in the operating-stem 2 for the purpose of holding the frame'open or closed. The outer end of the operating-stem 2 is provided with a handle 7, which acts as a stop for the end of the sleeve 4, and when these parts are together they form a convenient handle for the umbrella. The outer end of the operating-stem is also closed bya screwcap 8, and situated within this operatingstem and between the screw-cap 8 and the end of the stem is a spring 9, that serves to close the frame. 1
The parts being in the position shown in Fig. 1, it is obvious that the frame can be Serial No. 618,691. (No model.)
opened with one hand by simply retracting to press upon the detent, whereupon the spring 9, acting by expansion, forces the stem upwardly in an obvious manner.
It is plain that an umbrella constructed in this manner is especially useful for persons having only one arm or for those who have only one arm disengagedfor instance, persons carrying bundles. It is also useful as a wagon-umbrella, and can be readily operated by the driver with the use of only one hand. It is seen also that the umbrella can be opened by placing the tip end against a post or other stationary part and by pushing on the handle, which has the same effect as above: described when pressing the sleeve toward the handle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In an umbrella or the like, a hollow stem 2 provided at one end with a handle and closed at said end, a longitudinal slot in said stem 2, a stem 1 sliding in said stem 2 and provided at one end with a sleeve 4 that encircles the said stem 2 and is connected with said stem 1 through the said slot, a spring-actuated detent carried by the sleeve 4 of said stem 1 and adapted to engage openings in said hollow stem 2, a spring situated within said hollow stem and bearing at its opposite ends against the closed end of said hollow stem and the end of said stem 1, ribs pivoted to said stem,
1, and spreading-levers pivotedto said ribs and to said hollow stem 2.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES C. HALL. Witnesses:
A. O. BECKHAM, J. N. BORING.
