TOOL FOR HARVESTING CABBAGE-HEADS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 2, 1919.
Application filed. August 12, 1918. Serial No. 249,565.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Aucus'r N. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Green Bay, in the county of Brown and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools for Harvesting Cabbage-Heads, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying draw- 111 The invention relates to tools for harvesting cabbage heads and has for its object the provision of a tool which is adapted to sever the head and to hold it so that it may be thrown onto a pile or into a receptacle for convenient transportation.
llt is also an object of the invention to provide means on the tool for preventing the cabbage heads from rolling off.
A further object consists in equipping the tool with a plurality of arms adapted to hold the cabbage head on the tool and to prevent its rolling off but permitting the head to be disengaged and thrown to a remote place under the influence of a thrust or jerk imparted to the tool.
To the accomplishment of these and re lated ends the invention comprises the means described in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, the annexed drawing showing but one of the various ways in which the principle of the invention may be utilized.
In said drawing- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device, and
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates a blade formed like a shovel and terminating in a saw edge 2 at the forward end. Adjacent to the rear edge 3 and parallel thereto a series of upright pins 1 are disposed, constituting abutments to prevent the cabbage head from rolling off. In the drawing four such pins are indicated but this number is merely shown by way of example and may be arbitrarily increased or decreased without interfering with the result aimed at with the improved device. A handle 5 is secured to the blade 1 in any convenient and satisfactory manner and, as illustrated, the blade is formed at its rear central portion with a socket in which the end portion of the handle is received. A clamp r and, a
is fastened to the handle and spaced plates 7 are articulated to said clamp and constitute bearings for a shaft 8, extending parallel to the rear edge of the shovel 1. A plurality of arms 9 fastened tothe shaft 8 extend forwardly and carry rollers 10 adapted to revolve when guided overa cabbage head. The rollers are free to revolve in the direction for traveling over a head, but preferably secured against rotation in the opposite direction. A rod 11 equipped with terminal sleeves 12 is adjustably secured to the outer pins 4: by set screws 13. As indicated, the rod 11 forms a support for the arms 9 which upon adjustment of the rod are placed in more or less close position to the blade. A spring 14, coiled around the shaft 8 has its free end over one of the arms 9 so asto normally hold the arms in closed position, the opposite end of said spring being fastened to one of the spaced plates 7. Intermediate the plates 7 and arranged on the shaft 8 is a sleeve 15 formed with a rearwardly extending pin 16, around which a spring 17 is coiled. At a distance from the clamp a collar 18 is provided on the handle formed with extensions 19. The spring 17 is at one end secured to the pin 16 and abuts with its other end against the extensions 19.
The device is used in the following manner: In harvesting the operator places the rollers 10 on top of the heads of cabbage and simultaneously the blade 1 is forced down whereby the outer waste leaves of the head are folded downwardly. The tool is then actuated to sever the stock below the head and the latter will then roll on the blade 1 where it is maintained and secured against rolling off by engagement with the arms 9. The tool, together with the head is swung for the purpose of throwing the head over to a pile, care being taken that arms to said handle, resilient means fornormally maintaining said arms in proximity to said blade, and means for limiting the closing movement of said arms.
, 1 2." A'device of the kind specified, comprising ablade, a handle secured thereto, a plurality of upright pins on the blade, a plura-lity of arms extending forwardly past Copies of this patent may be obtained for said pins, means for pivotally securing said arms to said handle, resilient means for normally maintaining said arms in proximity to said blade, and adjustable means for limiting the closing movement of said arms.
3. A device of the kind specified, comprising a blade, a handle secured thereto, vertical pins near the rear edge of said blade, a rod secured to said pins, arms pivotally secured to said handle and supported by said rod, resilient means for maintaining said arms in engagen ient with said rod, and rollers arranged on the outer ends of said arms.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix my signature.
AUGUST N. ALLEN.
