DAVID G. ARMSTRONG, OF AKRON, OHIO.
CUFF HOLDER.
SEECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent o. 710,734, dated October 7, 1902.
Application filed April 16, 1902, erial No. 103,094. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, DAVID G. ARMSTRONG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Cunt-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to improvements in cuif-holders of that class in which a movable spring-pressed member is pivoted between ears of a fixed member and bears a button to enter the holes of the cuff, the
. shirt-sleeve being clasped between the ends of the m'embers. Heretofore the end of the fixed member has been provided with an upturned serrated edge to engage the cuff for a more secure grasp and the button is fiattened into a substantially elliptical form in section. these features of construction, the upturned serrated edge forming a rough object to scratch the hand of the person applying or using the holder and constantly tending to abraid the cuff, while the form of the button is difficult to press through the holes of the cuff when stiffened by starch, besides being more liable to break off because of the square under bearing.
The object of my invention is to overcome these objections by forming the serrated edge on the movable half and having it arranged to bear on the lower half back of the end, so that the points will not extend to come in contact with other objects, and a further object is to make the button round, so that it will readily pass by slight pressure through the buttonholes and be less liable to break off.
To the accomplishment of the aforesaid objects my invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter described and then specifically pointed out in the claim, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar reference-numeralsindicate like parts in the different figures, Figure 1- is a side elevation, greatly enlarged, of my improved cuffholder; Fig. 2, a central longitudinal vertical section; Fig. 3, a front elevation, and Fig. 4 a section of the shank at the line Z Z of Fig. 1.
Objection has been found to both Referring to the figures, 1 is a plate of metal, heretofore called the fixed member, having rounded ends to prevent offering rough corners and having intermediate oppositelydisposed vertical ears 2. The movable member 3 is a similar but shorter plate having oppositely-disposed ears l, adjusted to rest between the ears 2 and pivotally united therewith by a pivot-rod 5, which passes through openings in the cars. A coiled spring 6 in tension surrounds the rod 5, and its opposite ends bear against the plates 1 and 3, thus tending to spread their rear ends apart, and thereby force their front ends together. The front end of the movable plate is turned downward and serrated, forming a row of teeth that extend across the front end and partially back on each side, thereby affording a firmer grip than if they extended across the end merely. Secured to the back of the movable plate, slightly in advance of the pivot, is an upright shank 7, flattened on the sides to rest more easily in the buttonholes, and on the upper end of this staff is a spherical head 8.
In operation the head is forced through the buttonholes of the cuff, the cuff adjusted on the wrist, and the front ends of the plates 1 and 3 opened and closed on the sleeve at such a position as to hold the cuff at the desired point.
Having thus described. my invention, what 1 claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An improved cuff-holder consisting of a fixed and a movable plate, provided with perforated ears to register and a rod passing through said ears to pivot said plates, a coiled spring in tension about said rod with its ends bearing against said plates, one end of said movable plate bearing a serrated edge across its end and for a distance back therefrom arranged to engage the fixed plate back of its end, and having on its upper side a flattened shank with a round head, substantially as shown and described. 7
In testimony that I claim the above I hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DAVID G. ARMSTRONG.
