Description

J. ANDERSON.
PIN POINT GUARD.
APPLICATION FILED 11113.20, 1911.
1,024,762. Patented 1111113011912.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH ANDERSON, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
PIN-POINT GUARD.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pin-Point Guards, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a device for attachment upon ladies hat-pins; and the object in view is to provide means to afford protection against injury by the point of the pin when the latter is worn on the hat.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure 1 is a view of a ladys hat-pin, showing my invention applied thereon. Fig. 2 is an enlarged central longitudinal section of my device secured in place upon the hatpiii. Fig. 3 is a cross-section taken on line fanx. of Fig. 2, showing the clutch branches at right angles of their position shown in said latter figure. Fig. 4l is a central longitudinal section of the device, removed from the hat-pin. Fig. 5 is an elevation of the clutch member of the device.
Like reference characters indicate like parts,
My invention consists wholly of two parts, namely, a tubular guard member, a, and a clutch member b. The guard member, a, is a straight tube having one end closed, as al. The clutch member b, which is cylindrical, is provided with a central straight bore eX- tending longitudinally therethrough, as b1, of a size to receive the hat-pin p. Said member b has a head b2 provided with a reduced diametrical portion to fit within the open end of the guard member, a, and secured thereto in any suitable manner, and from the head b2 the remainder portion of said member b is divided by a central longitudinal slot 53, so as to provide two spring holding branches or jaws b4, b4 whose free ends have their curved surfaces adapted to bear against the internal surface of the guard member a, when the device is mounted upon the hat-pin, as at points b5, b5 in Figs. 2 and 3, and that portion between the ends b5 and the head Z22 is of lesser diameter in order to forni a long clearance-space, as at 5G in Fig. 2. When the device is free of the hat-pin the branches b4 assume a normal incline position toward each other from the head b2, in the manner as shown in Fig. 5.
Specification of Letters Patent.
` Application inea March 2o, 1911.
Patented Apr. 30, 1912.
Serial No. 615,466.
By arranging and constructing the jaws or branches b4 in the manner shown and described, a firm gripping action on the pin point is obtained, as there is a spring friction produced by the resiliency of the intermediate portion of the jaws and a jamming friction produced by the tip portions of the latter. This jamming friction is brought about by the tip portions of the jaws coming into contact with and being arrested by the surrounding guard member in the spreading apart of the jaws while the pin point is only partially inserted, and during the further insertion of the pin point, the latter is jammed between the tip portions in the jaw, resulting in a much greater frictional hold than if only the resiliency of the jaws was relied upon to retain the guard member on the pin points.
By my construction and arrangement of parts, as described, I provide a device having the advantage of obtaining a double frictional grip, at points 57 and b5, in holding itself firmly in position upon a hat-pin, and `at the same time a device consisting of only two members, a neat, durable and inexpensive article ishad to manufacture.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
The combination of a tubular guard member, a plurality of spring aws arranged within the guard member and having their outer ends fastened thereto for gripping a pin point inserted in the guard member, said jaws being normally out of contact with the guard member at their innerends and throughout the major portion of their length and yieldable laterally in opposition to their resiliency upon the insertion of the pin, each jaw having a portion of greater diameter than the middle portions and whose external face conforms to the shape of th-e internal surface of the guard member to bear thereagainst as the pin point is fully inserted thereby producing a jamming friction between said pin and aws.
In testimony whereof I afiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH ANDERSON.
