PAUL J. HENTSCI'IEL, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
GARMENT-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. *7, 1917.
Application filed April 7, 1917. Serial No. 160,397.
b all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, PAUL J. HENTSOHEL, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Baltimore, Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gan ment-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
The invention is adapted for fastening plackets, skirts, or any portions of garments, and it consists in the features and combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings;
Figure 1 is a plan view of one member of the fastener;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the other member;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the members in the position assumed by them in holding the parts of the garment together;
Fig. 4 is a side view of the member shown in Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a sectional view shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 6 is a bottom plan view of the member shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 6 11 indicates the base plate of one of the members, this having a central portion 12 swaged up therefrom having an elongated opening 13 therein, the said base plate being also cut at 14. The opening 13 has a large mouth communicating with the opening 14 to permit the entrance of a head 15 of the other member shown in Fig. 2, this head having a reduced neck portion to fit in the narrow portion of the elongated opening. Both portions of the fastener have openings to receive stitches for securing them to the garment. In order to prevent dislodgment of the headed member from the slotted member, except when the necessary degree of pressure is intentionally applied I provide spring'means for gripping the neck of the headed member, this spring 16 consisting of two arms lying alongside the outer Side of the raised or swaged central portion 12 of the member shown in Fig. 1, the arms of the spring being connected by a cross-portion at one end which extends through an opening between the top or raised portion and the base of the member. The ends of the spring arms are turned inwardly through notches 17 at the ends of the side walls of the raised or swaged central portion and these ends are bent to provide a curved bearof the member ing portion 18 to engage the neck of the member, shown in Fig. 2. These engaging ends as stated are rounded and from these rounded bearings the wire diverges so that inclined bearing surfaces are presented for the entrance of the neck between the spring ends and also inclined bearing portions are provided to engage the neck and hold the same in place until suflicient pressure is ap-- plied to move the headed member outwardly along the elongated opening past the spring.
It will be seen that the spring is held in place merely by engaging the base and the raised central portion, no other fastening means being required. Each arm of the spring grasps one wall of the central raised portion, being provided with sharply turned portiions extending across the ends of said wal It will be seen that no means, other than the bends in the spring itself engaging the ends of the walls of the raised portion, are needed to hold the spring in place. The hook ends of the spring and the bends where the sides merge into the cross piece hold the spring against longitudinal displacement while the overlying top wall of the raised center of the base plate holds the spring down in proper position.
' What I claim is:
1. A garment fastener consisting of a member having a base plate and a raised center portion with an open mouthed recess therein, a spring having arms exterior to and embracing the side walls of the said raised center portion with ends lying adjacent the opening, and a second member having base plate and a head and neck, the latter being adapted to be held by the ends of the spring to be retained thereby.
2. A garment fastener consisting of a member having a base plate and a raised center having a top plate and an opening below and at the rear of said top plate extending from one side wall to the other and with notches underlying the front ends of the top plate of the raised center and a spring having arms extending along the outer sides of the walls with bent ends passing through the notches and a forwardly bent cross piece extending into the rear opening and beneath the top plate, said top plate having an elongated opening with a mouth and a second member having a head to fit into said elongated opening to be held by the bent ends of the spring arms. Y
3. A garment fastener consisting of a member having a base plate and a raised center portion with an open mouthed recess therein, a spring having arms exterior to and embracing the side walls of the said raised center portion with ends lying adjacent the opening and with a cross piece underlying the top of the raised center portion, and a second member having a base plate and a head and neck, the latter being adapted to be held by the ends of the spring to be retained thereby.
4. A garment fastener consisting of a member having a base plate and a raised center with a top plate provided with an open mouthed recess, a spring exterior to and embracing the side walls of the raised center and confined between and held by the base plate and overlying portions of the top plate, and a second member adapted to be held by the spring in the open mouthed recess, substantially as described.
5. A garment fastener consisting of a member having a base plate and a raised center with a top plate provided with an open mouthed recess, a spring exterior to and embracing the side walls of the raised center and confined between and held by the base plate and overlying portions of the top plate, and a second member adapted to be held by the spring in the open mouthed recess, the base plate of the first mentioned member being open at the point below the top plate.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature.
