Description

PATENTED SEPT. 26, 1905.,
L. E. ARMEL. SGISSORS HOLDER.
APPLICATION rIL'nn MAILBI, 1904.
MODEL.
Attorneys UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 26, 1905.
Application filed March 31, 1904. Se ial NO- 200,994. (Model-l To roll whom, it 77am concern- Be it known that I, LEWIS E. ARMEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Holton, in the county of Jackson and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Scissors- Holder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to scissor-holding attachments to garments, more particularly for the use of female clerks in dry-goods and other stores where scissors are required to be carried in convenient positions, and has for its object to improve the construction and produce a device of this character which may be inexpensively manufactured, easily attached 0r detached, and which will yieldably support the scissors in convenient position for use when required.
WVith these and other objects in view, which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which corresponding parts are denoted by like designating characters, is illustrated the preferred form of the embodiment of the invention capable of carrying the same into practical operation.
In the drawings thus employed, Figure 1 is a front view of the device applied. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the holder detached. Fig. 3 is a view of the blank from which the body of the device is formed. Fig. i is a vertical sectional side view.
The improved device will preferably be constructed from a single sheet of metal of suitable strength, as shown in Fig. 3, and formed with the lower portion and upper portion 11, with clefts 12 13 between the portions. The sides 14 15 of the lower portion 10 are bent over toward each other to form a socket to receive and support the body portion 16 of the scissors, while the fingerloops 17 will come opposite the upper portion 11. hen thus bent into shape, the laterallyextending wings of the portion 11 serve as guards to prevent the finger-loops 17 of the scissors from coming in contact with the garments to which the device is attached. Any suitable means, such as a spring-pin 18, may be employed upon the rear side of the holder by which to detachably connect it to the garment of the wearer. The portion 11 of the holder is provided with a slot 19, in which a spring 20 is connected for extension into the socket formed by the inwardly-turned members 14 15 for bearing against the scissors therein to hold them yieldably in position. By this arrangement it is obvious that a simply-constructed and easily-applied device is produced which may be readily applied at any desired part of the dress of the wearer and will be found very convenient and useful for the purposes described. Another important advantage of the upwardly-extending portion 11 is that it serves as a guide for assisting in inserting the scissors; otherwise there would be danger of the points of the scissors, when hurriedly inserted, catching into the garment of the operator. This is of material advantage, as will be obvious.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is- A holder for scissors formed of a single piece of metal the sides of the lower portion of which are bent to form a socket for the reception of the shank of the scissors and the upper portion thereof extended to produce lateral wings adapted to engage the fingergrips of the scissors, said holder being provided with a transverse opening in alinement with said socket, a spring seated in said opening and having its free end extended Within the socket and adapted to bear against the shank of said scissors, and means connected to the rear of the holder for attaching the latter to a garment.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
LEWIS E. ARMEL.
