Description

UNITED STATES PATE T OFFICE.
JENNIE L. STURTEVANT, OF GILROY, CALIFORNIA.
FLOWER-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 596,221, dated December 28, 1897.
Application filed February 18, 1897. Serial No. 623,968. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J ENNIE L. STURTEVANT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gilroy, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flower-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has reference to a novel construction in a device that is adapted more especially for holding flowers upon a garment and it consists in the features of construction herein after particularly set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification Figure 1 is a perspective View of a holder constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 illustrates the same as applied to agarment, and Fig. 3 is a perspective View of a modified cons'truction embodying this invention.
In accordance with the principle involved by this invention I employ two pins having sharp ends, so that they can be inserted through the cloth of the garment, which are provided at their other ends with a crosspiece carrying a forwardly-extending eye or socket. In the construction shown in Fig. 1 the'pins l and the cross-piece 2 are of separate pieces, the latter being a piece of sheet metal bent at its ends upon the ends of the pins or otherwise secured thereto, while between its ends it is provided with the forwardly-extending socket 3, as shown.
. The points of an implement constructed in this manner can be Very easily passed through the cloth, and when so placed the socket or loop stands out from the garment, so that the stems of the flowers or any other article that it may be desired to fasten to the garment may be passed therethrough. It is especially useful in connection with flowers having short or fragile stems, which are liable to break or be insecurely fastened by the use of ordinary pins. It will be seen that the stems can be inserted through the socket and are effectually held without danger of being broken.
In the modification shown in Fig. 3 the pins, cross-piece, and the socket are made of one piece of wire bent into suitable shape, as shown.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A holder of the kind specified consisting of pins provided at one end with a cross-piece and a laterally-projecting socket or loop.
2. A holder of the kind specified consisting of two pins provided at one end with a crosspiece consisting of a sheet-metal plate fastened to said pins and provided with a socket or loop.
3. A holder of the kind specified, consisting of two pins connected at one end by a crosspiece, said cross-piece being formed intermediate its end with a lateral bend disposed at an angle to the pins, substantially as de scribed.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JENNIE L. STURTEVANT;
