WILLIAM R. CRAWFORD, JR, OF RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA.
PEN AND PENCIL HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 25, 1908.
Application filed. October 3, 1907. Serial No. 395,672.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM R. CRAW- FORD, Jr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Raleigh, in the county of Wake and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and Improved Pen and Pencil Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.
The purpose of this invention is to provide novel details of construction for a pen and pencil holder, and means for adj ustably connecting said holder With suspenders for trousers, in a convenient position for ready access thereto as occasion may require.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as is hereinafter described and defined in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a front perspective View, show ing the device mounted u on suspenders that are in use; Fig. 2 is an en arged front view of the improvement mounted for service on a suspender band; Fig. 3 is an edge view thereof, seen in direction of the arrow 9/: in Fig. 2;
and Fig. 4 1s a reversed side view of the same, seen in direction of the arrow at" in Fig. 3.
The pen or pencil holder, comprises a preferably pliable back piece 5, that may be formed of leather, or other suitable material. The back piece, as shown best in Fig. 2, is oblong, parallel on the side edges and rounded on the edge at each end. A plurality of elongated pockets 6 are formed or secured on the back piece 5, the walls defining said pockets each having an outwardprojection, so as to present open upper ends for convenient insertion therein of one or more pencils, or the contracted bodies of Writing pens as indicated in the drawings.
The device that has been described is designed for an adjustable attachment upon either one of a pair of suspenders A, and to this end, a novel clasp has been provided which is constructed as follows. A wire strand that is resilient and has sufficient length for the formation of the clasp, is bent near its center of length at two points, thus producing two limbs b, I), that are joined to a central straight bar a by the return bends a. The limbs b, I), approach each other and at two points, 0, c, the wire rod material is bent outward so as to produce two divergent limbs c, 0. At d, d, return bends are formed on the end portions of the wire rod, producing two top bars (1 for the clasp, that terminate in a hook on each, said hooks e, 6, being passed forwardly through a transversely central perforation g in the back piece 5, near the upper end thereof, and clenched so as to securely fasten the clasp on the rear face of the back piece. The distance between the return bends c a, and the upper return bends d, d, is equal, and slightly greater than the width of the suspender band A, so that said band may be passed through the oblong eye formed by the bends a, bar a and limbs 12. The suspender band is passed between the limbs c and the return bent top bars at, which completes the attachment of the back piece 5 and pockets 6 upon the suspender band A. The members of the clasp are dis posed in the same plane, considered flatwise, and due to the manner in which the suspender band A is inserted through the clasp, friction is produced between said parts, which will hold the clasp and attachedback piece 5 at any desired point on the suspender band. It will be seen that when the device is in position on the suspender band a pencil B, or pens C, may be placed in the holder pockets 6 and thus be disposed for convenient removal and return thereto, as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The combination with a holder for pencils or the like, of a clasp secured at one end to the back of the holder and provided with two loops arranged one above the other and through both of which a suspender band is adapted to be passed to secure it frictionally thereto.
2. The combination with a holder for pencils and the like, of a clasp having an interlocking engagement at one end with the holder to secure it thereto and provided with two loops arranged one above the other and through both of which a suspender band is adapted to be passed to secure it frictionally to the said band.
3. The combination with a holder for pencils or the like having an opening therein, of a clasp having members passed through the opening of the holder and bent down upon the same to secure the clasp thereto, and provided with loops through which a suspender band is adapted to be passed to secure it frictionally thereto.
4. The combination with a pencil holder having an opening at one end, of a clasp for securing the holder on a suspender band, comprising a Wire strand bent into form, producing an oblong eye at one end, divergent limbs extended from said eye, return bent top bars on the ends of the limbs, and hook members on extremities of said top bars, said hooks engaging the opening of the holder.
5. A holder for pencils or the like, comprising a back piece having pockets thereon and provided With an opening at one end, and a clasp formed of a piece of Wire bent to form loops through which a suspender band is adapted to be passed to secure it friction- 15 ally thereto, the ends of the Wire being passed through the opening of the back piece and bent down upon the same to secure the clasp thereto.
In testimony whereof I have signed my 20 name to this specification in the presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
WILLIAM R.. CRAWFORD, JR.
